Marauder
Flying Sunday cooling fan failed warning came on, Garmin shop or MSC? Garmin shop. I don’t think Garmin sells parts to a non-dealer. (I’m not sure they sell repair parts at all). DonMuncy
Prepare yourself. They have a flat rate (not cheap) to do any repair.
ArtVandelay
Don is correct, close to a $1000 if I remember correctly. I would call G directly to see what they say. Tom
jetdriven
I think the flat rate repair is 1250 for the GTN
Bravoman
I have a 650, does it have a built-in fan? Or does the cooling fan warning mean that it is overheating for some reason?
ArtVandelay
I have a 650, does it have a built-in fan? Or does the cooling fan warning mean that it is overheating for some reason? It has a fan, which you can hear if you turn on your avionics without the engine running. It may only run when required.
larrynimmo
I thought the Garmin fan was part of the tray...not sure though
Duane Baker
I talked to my Garmin shop in Conroe, Tx. He said the fan is only there to keep the touch screen cool, not the radio itself. It's mounted on the rack, major take apart. He said don't worry about it, fix it when your in the panel for something else. Sooo I'll wait.
81X
I’ve spoken to G about this issue as I had and very occasionally still do have the same warning on my 750. The fan is on the back of the tray which needs to be taken out to be replaced. If the unit begins to overheat, the screen dims and possibly the comm tx power may decrease depending on the heat level. Even in summer in SC, my screen hasn’t dimmed when the message came up. My plan is to get it replaced after the ads b craze opens up some shop time for some other avionics upgrades. Side note, I was able to tour some of the test equipment at Garmin when I was there- the ovens, freezers and lightning simulators they use to test the equipment are very cool.
larryb
Electronics do not like heat. Heat will exponentially reduce life. If there is a problem with a fan I would fix it at the earliest opportunity.
Jim Peace
I got the message to: It came on when flying at 6000 feet NJ to SC for fuel stop then on the second leg it was not there..... installed about 2.5 years ago..... What do you make of it not being there anymore? I searched the internet and this apparently happens a lot..... Cant have a reliable fan in this century? ArtVandelay
If you ever have the avionics on without the engine you’ll notice the fan sounds like it is working at 100%. Doesn’t seem to be like computer fans that are adjusted based on need.
PT20J
When I used to design telco equipment, the specs required there be no cooling fans since the MTBF for fans was much lower than the rest of the electronics. You can imagine the issue at a large central office with an acre of equipment racks. If every box had a cooling fan, there would be thousands of them and probably multiple failures per day. Quite a trick to design for convection cooling with the possibility that your unit was mounted at the top of an 11' 6" telco rack with everything below heating up your box! Compared to that, the radio stack in an airplane is a piece of cake. The biggest issue is going to be heat soaking when the airplane has been sitting on a hot ramp in the summer for a few hours. In a J there is a central cooling fan (unless it's been removed) and it may be possible to direct a duct to blow air on the back of the GTN equipment tray. Warren
The fan on a 650 is mounted to the back plate and is not integral to the unit. It is relatively easy to install a new fan...assuming you can get to the back plate.

PT20J
According to the maintenance manual, the fan screws to the GTN backplate and has a connector. Check with a Garmin dealer, but it appears field replaceable.

Will.iam
Looks like a pc fan. Wonder if blowing off the dust with compressed air every annual would extend the life of the fan?
Davo
Same thing happened to me. I found the original part number at avnet.com and ordered 2 for about $12 each. Google part number SG40281B1-D05U-G99. Easy to replace and has worked perfectly since.
201Steve
I have not seen the warning in the past 3 flights and I can hear it if I turn it on previous to startup so I’ll just be keeping an eye on it. Glad to know it’s a simple fix should it come back up!
