Headsets

Recommended Posts

I've only owned two headsets: David Clark 13.5 Stereo and a Bose X.  Neither headset has ever required service to date.  I think the DC is an excellent headset BUT for the clamping force.  Over my average two hour flights NOT a big deal.  The Bose has NO clamping force issue.  The sound quality and noise attenuation is vastly superior to non ANR headsets.  I will likely never upgrade as if it breaks I will attempt to have repaired or replace with a used Headset X.  I was sent two sets by Bose and charged for one...sold second for six hundred so got my headset X for $100 bucks.  I have no desire to try Senns...or others as I am TOTALLY happy with the Headset X.  Yes the Bose has poor attenuation if batteries fail...that's why I have spare batteries on board.  I think the cost of the headsets is ridiculous...but they do work well.

I have used DCs for the last 12 years or so without any problems. Last year I went to Oshkosh and decided that I was going to upgrade to an ANR set. I looked at and tried on every set out there including the just then released Bose A20. The quietest out there was definitly the A20, but the Zulus were a extremely close second. The cost differential sold me. I bought the Zulus and have been pleased with them so far. The passive mode works just fine. A while back I took off and flew half a flight before I realized that I had forgot to switch the ANR on. I kept thinking the plane was louder or something, but communications with ATC was fine. Then I remembered, oh yeah, the little button! It was like this huge relief with that rush of silence. Too many years with passive sets I guess.
