1977 M20C - need a Heater Cable

Recommended Posts

Team,

My heater cable broke on the heater box end in the engine compartment - the end that broke was brittle from age and is unrepairable.

Does anyone have options for a replacement cable.

My shop called Mooney and a replacement one is $500 -  OUCH.  I believe the book says the cable is for 1975 - 1977 C models.  Not sure if the J shares the same part.

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Check with your A&P but i replaced mine with this one https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/a7401.php?clickkey=4047 if the outer sleeve is good i would pull the cable out from the cockpit and slide the new cable into the existing sleeve. Here’s is the bulkhead clamps as well. https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/bowdenclamp.php?clickkey=32140

Hopes this helps.

Give Dan at LASAR a call.  He fixed my carb heat cable by replacing the wire and sent it back with a repair station tag on it.  It was cheaper and faster than any other alternative (albeit, about 10 years ago).  They're on the wrong coast from you, but a cable is small and light enough that shipping shouldn't kill you.

Thanks for the options so far.  My A&P wont sign off on the Aircraft Spruce cables as they are not PMA'ed.   Mcfarlane and Lasar look like good options.

Any suggestions for folks that salvage Mooneys and part them out?

I likely have the cable out of my 77 J since I swapped consoles and stuff from my 81 salvage. It would still be a 42 year old cable, though. I think if you called a Mooney shop like Maxwell, you might be advised that the inner wire is simply piano wire, and you could easily replace it with the outer case still in place and then you'll never have to worry about it for the rest of your life. No need to make it harder or more expensive IMO...it's not an engine control cable which should be replaced with new.
