GTN750 Cooling Fan

Recommended Posts

On a few of my past few flights, I’ve received a message on my GTN750 that “the cooling fan has failed”.  Some of these flights have been hours long, and the unit never complained about overheating, but nonetheless it needs to be replaced.

Does anyone know if this is “user replaceable” and/or can be done by a Garmin dealer or if it needs to go to a specialist?

Yes, the fan is mounted on the back of the rack. As mentioned above, access will be the worst part. I’m not sure of the availability of the fan to anyone other than Garmin dealers. When I get to work I can take a pic of one and post it so you have an idea.

Excellent, thanks. I heard back from Garmin this morning and got some good intel on failure modes and such. Bottom line is that even if it’s still partially working, it needs to be replaced.  A reassuring note is that the thermal protection software/system helps keep the unit functional by dimming the screen, etc to keep it cool.

No problem. The fan itself is very easy to remove. Getting access to it in a Mooney can be very difficult as there is little to no room behind the radios. This all depends on how your radio stack is configured. Good luck!

Yeah, I just went out and it’s tight back there.  The rack probably needs to come out (yuck)

Related, my cat tubing from the vent box that keeps the avionics bay cool is old and cracking, does anyone know what size this is?  Also, bonus points if you know what size the small tubing is for an avionics fan as I have one of those as well.
