337 approval difficulty

I’d really like to get approval to replace my ASI, AI, and altimeter with a Garmin G5. This would be used to backup my Aspen. I feel there is a reasonable argument that because the G5 is certified to be the sole backup for a Txi w/o backup battery it has the capability to provide the same for the Aspen.

How much work or expense is required to obtain a field approval for this type of modification?

I really think many individuals would benefit from this. Is there a way for multiple people to be approved at the same time or is it limited to a single aircraft?

I only haver the G5 acting as the backup AI for my Aspen PDF. I still have the original ASI and Altimeter. I'm not aware of any installation that allows the G5 to act as backup for all three steam gauges. I would need a second Aspen to allow me to remove the ASI and Altimeter.

I know many installers used tricks to get the g5 certified as a backup AI. I think they called it primary during the installation and the Aspen a secondary or backup source. I’m not sure if they needed a field approval for this deviation from the stc.

Now that the stc allows the g5 to be a backup AI, ASI, and altimeter to the Garmin Txi panel I would think a field approval to switch the main panel should be straightforward. IIRC the installation manual does not even require direct communication between the txi and g5.

Aspen and Garmin will never certify the g5 to be used in this way because they’re protecting the bottom dollar. The only way I could see this happening is to get an isolated approval.

Is there normally a lot of back and forth for 337 approvals or just a very detailed sit down?

A 337 for this would probably involve a sit down to ascertain whether or not the FSDO would even be open to the idea and what form the 337 would take. After that, there would probably a good amount of emails back and forth to get the wording right.

Once the IA has the first installation done and approved, he can do as many more as he likes on the same airframe type by using the original 337 as the approved data. Whether it applies to all M20s or only specific models like C,E, J, etc. would be up to the FSDO. That specific IA would have to do all subsequent installation approvals, he could not sell the data for another IA to reference. To do that would require him to get an STC.

Its truly not that difficult to do.  It is mostly about wording.  Anyone worth their weight has had to do things like this in the past and it is simply "Creative Writing 101" that needs to be adhered to.

When you want to get something done, no matter what it is, it's best to find a shop with confidence to do it. If a shop tells you how difficult it is, or how its not recommended, or is otherwise negative about the project, find another shop.

The shop that did my Aspen + G5 combo said, "no problem" from the very first mention. And sure enough, it was super easy.

I'm sure Greg could get this done for you super easy. But if you're trying to convince a shop that it can be done, you're in the wrong shop.
