Chromosomal chemtrails

During interphase your chromosomes don't look like that at all.  It's only during a brief period, after S phase and before anaphase that they appear in this fashion.  They look like little X's because the DNA has all just been replicated.  Actually, they only look like X's if the centromere is somewhere near the middle of the chromosome (metacentric or submetacentric).  Mouse chromosomes are telocentric, meaning the centromere is on the end.  They look like little V's.
