Today's flight in 2019

Made the 116nm journey to Green Bay today to take the Instrument Written. I’m not sure if it was the fact that I crammed for two days or that I was wearing my Detroit Lions t shirt but I passed with an 88%. Two of the questions I completely messed up but there were two questions that were BS. I’ll have to look them up when I get home shortly and see why the FAA is ridiculous.

Our house is just off the wing tip in that town river shot.

Gorgeous day just flying around.

The foggy pic was at Ithaca a week ago. Can’t be to far from you.

Ok, I looked your town up, you are way up north!

Ah - I know KITH well. I had one son graduate from Cornell and another son currently at Cornell.

Next time you are at KITH - head north and pop by!  Its not far by Mooney.

Beautiful day today! Can’t say I notice any difference in cruise speed with the VGs but it definitely makes crosswind landings easier!

Winds over the hills were from the north at 30 knots and surface winds were from the west at 8. Instead of dropping in over the hills I decided to go out over Morro Bay and had a smooth pattern entry and landing. A 310 right behind me went over the mountains for a right downwind and reported severe turbulence (after he put his headset back on). I’d told my passenger beforehand that we were going to descend over the water to avoid the wind shear and when he heard the PIREP he asked “why did he do that if he knew it was going to be so turbulent?” Good question. Seems like a great reminder that plotting the course in foreflight isn’t enough, we still have to pay attention to the local terrain and winds.

Lovely fall Day in the Mid-Atlantic region.  254398BA-98EC-4406-8D39-D5F928531DC2.thumb.jpeg.b3b987eb671c8c5e98ca313267d4bdbf.jpeg

Approaches, slow flight, steep turns. Nobody seemed to be out there flying this morning even though it was clear with 50 miles visibility.

I was stuck at work . . .

But hey, I escaped before dark two days this week!

I was visiting my daughter in Boston this weekend.   Sunday was nice day so we took a trip to Bar Harbor, Maine (KBHB) for the afternoon.   This was my first time visiting and it was a great time of year to do it.

Bar Harbor is one of my favorite places to visit. Love walking to the docks and getting fresh lobsters.

Harris Ranch - October 19, 2019

Great fun at the Harris Ranch fly-in for the West Coast Mooney Club. Got to meet a bunch of new folks and had one of my worst landings in a long time when the bottom fell out just before touchdown...

@MrRodgers, thanks for organizing it, hope it's okay I stole your picture of the lunch.

I told Richard Simile at the Mooney Summit I would put the tape on the ASI before flying again and there it is. I think I will replace it with a little thinner piece. (Stall speed of 67 x 1.404 = 94)

If you don't know what the tape is for you need to watch the Youtube Video.

I just did the same on my ASI before departing for Harris Ranch.  It's a good reminder to have in front of you while in a high workload environment. I plan on adding an AOA indicator in the near future as well.

Night currency....   Went out to get it.   Night flying is harder.   30% moon.   Landing to the north.    The decreasing energy to land for normal landing  requires ground reference.  Does not work at night.   Have to revert back to standard pattern flying with square corners.  Mostly a direct crosswind just to keep things fun.   Barrelling down the runway for first take off thought was "This seems like a bad idea, what could go wrong"   Did a touch and go.   Survived it.   Final evaluation. Pretty much suck at night flying.

+1 on Boston and Bar Harbor...

The rowing regatta on the Charles was this weekend... Parents weekend at BU... :)

Best regards,

-a-

Right!  And rowing regatta in Saratoga Springs, NY today - and I'm flying over there in an hour or so to do it!

I've done the head of the Charles but that one scares me a bit with all those turns and stone bridges - its kind of creepy going under low arched stone bridges at full race speed because remember you are going backwards rowing.

Night flying is harder.  The landings are ALWAYS heavy as you cant see the runway and fall into a hole.  Best always to focus on the runway lights for depth perception.  Be interesting to see how I do, as not flown baby at night for a while and the 14th is my night flight practice day. :)

My night currency landings are usually quite gentle, often just rolling the mains on. Funny, because during the day I almost can't land if the wind is calm, but at night it's so easy to grease her on, roll to the end, turn around and go the other way.

Maybe close your eyes during the day landings.
