Today's flight in 2019

Not exactly today's, but Saturday, August 24 2019 was my first flight in my M20K.

After a few dozen of practice circuits and some time for me to calm down from all the excitement, we took N4041H for a spin EPKP - EPNT - EPNL - EPKP.  Not even a XC, but we have to start somewhere...

Happy to report the plane, and all on board, survived.

We put 1,000 miles of travel on our 67 Mooney M20F (N9268M) this past week. Las Vegas, NV. Camarillo, Van Nuys, San Luis Obispo (Oceano Airport).

It is really great to finally get out and stretch the distances I fly while utilizing my transition training from Light Sports.

The Mooney is such a fantastic platform and I can't wait to do more long distance trips.

Departing Oceano Airport. The marine layer delayed our return by one day and just hung over the airport. We saw a patch of blue and took off back to Van Nuys.

Stopped for lunch at Wendover Utah   Those big runways were in 1945 the training site for the atomic B-29 squadrons.

Our trouble over here is “safeguarding”.  We have gone overboard on child protection to the point that if we wanted to do an equivalent young eagles then every one taking part would have to submit to a criminal records search and character search.  (The adults that is) and that is such a painstaking process and costs approx 300 quid per search  so people dont do it.

For what it's worth, the Young Eagles program also now requires background checks for all pilots. It's done when the pilot first signs up to volunteer, and then again on some recurring interval.

I believe that EAA pays for the background checks at a negotiated bulk rate. There is no cost to the volunteer (except in the form of EAA membership dues).

The background checks must not be prohibitively expensive, because I run into them all the time.   I volunteer for various tech fairs, robotics competitions, driving schools, etc., for teenagers and can't think of an instance in a long time where they *didn't* have one of those.   It's kinda good and kinda sad at the same time, but it's how it's done these days whenever kids are involved.

Sad indeed, EAA mandated it 4~5 years ago after 2 seperate instances neither which were at a Young Eagles event but it was were the pilot met the child. The good news is one of sick pricks committed suicide and the other was sent to the pen, where child molesters usually don't last

Saturday my wife and I took a couple of the young women from her church group along to the Camarillo Air Show. @MrRodgers had worked out a discount (one ticket gets everyone in the plane into the show) so of course you need to fill all the seats! Neither of the girls had ever been in a small plane before, but they loved it! You can see the excitement as we took off from KFUL. Hope you enjoy the post and the short video.

So much flying in the last month I haven’t been able to post on this thread. Oshkosh was a blast and look forward to next year! I went up this morning for a short flight to warm up the oil and decided to check out a close by short airport. I didn’t plan on landing but once I flew over it I figured it was doable. It’s now the shortest and narrowest airport in my log book. And probably as back country and tinny airport I’ll ever land at in the Mooney. My wing span being just over 6’ wider than the runway. Landing on 32 you are landing a little up hill but into rising no go around terrain. Another first for me in this plane. Exciting times, now to finish the dirty work....

Can it be "Yesterday's Flight"? :)

My CFI and I flew my new plane home yesterday:

image.png.5d1e277131a204a0b3fcae1d95d2a85f.png

We stopped for fuel in KPGA and KHBR, deviated around buildups just west of ABQ, and spent a good bit of time riding the mid-day bumps over NM and TX.  Wheels up in NV at 7am local, tied down in AR at 9:15pm local.  It'll be quite some time before I fly that much in one day again...

I got pictures en route to KPGA, but threw my phone in the back seat when we got ready to leave Page and I forgot to take any more pictures.  Ah well, here are a couple I did get:

And of course, the obligatory picture of the plane in Page:

GPM - MEZ to pick up my plane from the paint shop. Finally got wing skin painted (don't ask). Was flown up in a Cherokee 235.

Then flew MEZ-NEW, picked up a friend, flew back NEW-GPM. Saturday we watched Auburn beat the Oregon Ducks.

Sunday >   GPM - > GTU

Picked up a friend at GTU who was needing a ride to Houston to attend a wedding.

did GTU-SGR.

Dropped him off then flew SGR-NEW. Spent sunday night back in New Orleans. Finally flying back to GPM Monday.

15.5 hours from Friday-Monday noon. Great weekend.

There were a billion Mooney's on the ground at GTU <3 and at NEW.

Dodged the surprise storms that hit Dallas around noon on Friday and saw an awesome lightning show down south of Lufkin and North of Shreveport.

Short Labor Day flight to get in the air and eat some good food. Total of only about 40 minutes of flight time, but after that breakfast I didn't need to eat again until dinner!

I didn't finish mine. My son did put down all but one bite of biscuit, but then at his age I could get away with eating whatever I wanted...

Enroute south to KSBP to visit @ilovecornfields yesterday

An easy way to transit the SF bay class B is by flying over it VFR.   Oakland airport as seen from about 14,000’ —

Then on south to Big Sur and along the coast to Morro Bay and in to San Luis airport.

Some storms over the Sierras—but they’re a long way off in the clear air at 17,500.

Test pilot today, finished annual with no issues replaced one of the main tires could have gone another year but was a good time to do it since wheel had to come off anyway. Annual took just over three days and even though it gets a little harder to crawl around the airplane as I'm getting older it's still fun and satisfying to see things first hand. Did some adjustment of the dog house and test flight in near ninety degree day climbing at 100mph saw an improvement in CHT but will need a few flights to be certain.  Seems like there are a few of us on Mooney S doing annuals right now hope everyone's goes as well as ours did this year.
