Today's flight in 2019

Today I flew home from Vegas. It was my first IFR flight on my new IR ticket.... the weather was clear and clear so didn’t get it wet. But I got about 5 reroutes so I got to work the brain in someway. The flight was just over five hours. The day started out pretty cool, when I got to the airport there was a can’t miss famous airplane tied up at the transient parking! And let me say it’s even cooler in person! And I got to fly formation with N201PH:)5dbc77898756931ef321f284e97fb3ed.jpg5a1ce87b0a248d1b8f66a5c8870fa6d7.jpg0d49464a488896aaade153bd928c54b9.jpg

The instrument ticket was well worth the journey!!!!

We flew to the Grand Canyon and Lake Powell from Sedona. It was a perfect day for flying and the scenery was spectacular. Even our pictures don’t do justice to the natural beauty. This was definitely a Mooney flight of a lifetime. We feel blessed and privileged that we can do this flight in our Mooney.

A few pictures (or it didn’t happen):

We were in Grand Canyon Village and Sedona last week.  Our first time in GC.  Amazing to say the least but cold!

Flew home today from KUNV (State College, PA - where I was visiting Penn State).  I was delayed a day because of an atypical strong winter storm at home in the style of a spinning noreaster that left a lot of new snow.  So we have been covered in white solid now since mid November.

The one picture is passing over Ithaca - which I shot because my son is down there attending college.  I waved to him...

And of courts white and bright clear blue at home in front of my hangar.

First serious cross country  trip since my hand surgeries.  Also first trip to our Florida home since the Christmas break.  Man this weather beats our U.P. winters!!  Departed at 18 degrees, landed 3 hours and 25 minutes later at 72 degrees.   The wife is happy!!

Recognize the airport?

Airport looks very familiar. Its not KDET as the runways are not perpendicular there. I thought it was KFNT but those runways intersect. Its not KPTK as there is a micro sized parallel runway. I went on Google maps and started searching and it doesn't seem to be at AZO, BTL, MBS, TOL, or TVC.

I then looked at the sidebar, read your N number, used my government-trained "creepy" search techniques and reviewed your Flightaware flight path with the sectional overlay where I realized that you flew South of Wittman Regional KOSH !

Today’s flight didn’t happen for me. I was planning on flying to MRY for the airshow today. Went to the airport yesterday and did a couple of trips around the pattern, fueled up the plane, added some TKS fluid and updated the databases.

This morning there was a front moving through, low ceilings, tops at 11k with freezing level at 6-8k. Decided to drive instead.

I was awarded with an amazing performance by Sean Tucker and Jessie Panzer with their formation aerobatics full of amazing stuff including my son’s favorite, a double hammerhead. Not even 15 minutes after their performance we ran into them and they graciously agreed to let me take a picture with my son. The whole way back he kept saying “Sean Tucker gave me a fist bump!”

This was from last week, but going over the Coastal mountains into Penticton for work.  Had great break in the weather and beautiful clear, VFR landing.50 miles to the north Kelowna was fogged into the ground and heard all the heavies in the hold trying to get in. Just smiled as that would have been my back up flight if weather was too rough.

Ran the TKS to clear some ice picked up when I was descending through the layer back into Victoria.

Had to wait till this afternoon for the snow and over cast to break up, but flew into Troutdale to start the annual on Monday. I was able to climb vfr through the left over clouds and picked up my IFR clearance in the air. It was another learning experience since my filed was not close to my cleared. But the IFD100 makes short work of it. There was Airmet Zulu over the eastern part of Oregon and by the time I got west of the cascades and past it all the clouds were gone, so still haven’t got the new ticket wet.

I have posted a couple of times about fastest ground speeds in my Mooney but this is a first.  Recent trip from KY, at 14.5 in the M20K (252) because of weather - I clocked a record ground speed (the other way) in cruise: 77kts

The slowest I saw was 72 but my friend grabbed this one off FlightAware during the flight: 77kts over the ground.

My slowest was 27 kts ground speed in cruise. That was in my first Mooney, a '67C going from El Paso, TX to Tucson, AZ. There was dust though 11,000 ft that was so bad I had to file IFR and I had to climb to12,000 ft. to get out of it. I had over 100kt headwinds for at least part of the flight. A UPS pilot I knew, flying roughly the same route at about the same time but obviously much higher had over 200 kts headwind.

The turbulence must have been horrendous?
