Need a mechanic for prebuy near Indianapolis. Asap

Hi everybody. New to to the site but finally trying to grab a Mooney(and first plane). I have found one and price is right, just need a pro to take a look at it. Was recommended a mechanic, but I would like to try and find my own so they are unbiased of course. Plane is north of Inidanapolis 60mi. 1965 M20e. Want to make sure everything is complied with and up to date, and the corrosion horror stories, don't want that. Please let me know asap if someone is willing and able to help out. Andersonaircaft out of KAID is top notch. They've done work on our M20C that our normal A&P didnt have experience doing with Mooneys.

Please don't do a pre-buy. Go ahead and do an Annual. In the long run it will save you money...go deep and find all the problems. Take the seats out, pull back the carpet to look at the fuel tank senders and seems. Take a looK under the back seat at the spar.....etc.

Josh Groh at KHYF is somewhat Mooney familiar, but I believe he has a vested interest in the group that sells Mooneys out of Marion, In. which is probably who is brokering/selling this one. My one and only piece of advice is whoever you get to do a prebuy or pre annual (not a bad idea) should be the person taking care of your airplane for you.  That'll minimize the surprises you'll run into after a year.

 If I have learned one thing from this site is that if I were buying a vintage Mooney I would absolutely want someone who was 1000% Mooney knowledgeable doing the pre-purchased inspection, which, as indicated, really should be an annual.  The  corrosion issues that are unique to the  Mooney airframe can be too easily missed by  someone who isn’t a Mooney specialist.  That was really driven home to me when I saw an early 90s J model(not a vintage plane) at my MSC  for a pre-buy. The plane was gorgeous. Unfortunately, the spar corrosion from mouse urine was so bad that it  caused the deal not to get done. I never got an understanding as to if it was repairable and how much it would cost to fix.

I've seen those types of situations, hence the concern. Lol I have a mechanic that is supposedly well versed in Mooneys going to do a prebuy. I might still op for the annual route to be sure. Corrosion is the real big issue that I worry about.

I would rather do that, but I live in CA, so slightly harder than a quick trip to the shop.

Don’t rush...

Some PPIs are deeper than some annual inspections at an MSC...

Depends on the value of what you are buying... (cost of a car vs cost of your house)

Leave some room in your budget...

Transition Training can be as important as anything else...

Try to get things inspected deep enough that there are no surprises waiting for your first annual after purchase...

I'm going to give them a ring. Problem with nailing an annual is that everyone is super booked from what I have seen. I know the plane has at least been flying, but that corrosion potential is no joke

Thanks for the info, and information from all others as well.  I have done a ton of research. Have extra cash for a couple upgrades I know I need to do, and potential problem annual. I know last annual was 3400. And is due again in 4 months. Problem with dealers is that they sell planes, so they need to sell as man thg as possible. As a buyer. I'm in the business of buying and only need one good one.

Hence the advice of not rushing...

that corrosion potential exists in all airplanes, and all engines...

That's who I was thinking of. Kokomo, not Marion, sorry. Josh Groh used to (about 10 years ago) have a relationship with them, I don't know if he still does

Awesome replies everybody. I think I have it figured out but your advice has been amazing. Hopefully it all works out. Can't wait to see where my potentially new plane takes me. Atleast I know what plane I want. Just have to nab the right one.

If annual is due in four months...do it now! $3500 for an annual on a vintage means that not much was found.... so what's waiting? Exhaust, pucks, mounts, mags, tank re-seal, .... if those things haven't been done in the past ten years....then they will come up soon and cost a lot of time and money. Don't rush...figure out what you've got for the price and what will come in the near future as a prevention...or like most things, when you are least expecting them.

I've seen plenty of planes flying that had known and unknown problems, so I wouldn't weigh that fact .... if it went flying it wouldn't be for sale yet.

Absolutly great points and info. Update. Did a really great prepurchase on this plane and feel super confident in my purchase. I flew out and saw it in person along with the prepurchase. Landed a mechanic that is well versed in Mooneys and actually learned a lot of things about them that I didn't know, or even think about from all my research. I think I found a plane that fits my needs at a decent price and with very minimal issue. So that being said...I'm now officially a Mooney M20E owner (hope this goes well).  Thanks to this site for the info and help. Next is some interior work and adsb compliance.
