Yeah, I can't find anything that just shows where the new approaches are.  :(

Ah, had to dig into the spreadsheet.   Here's what I pulled out there, which seems to have some errors in it, anyway.

Robert - there was an FAA site where they showed the timeline for approaches they are planning. Do you have this site bookmarked?

After several years of no IFR flying I have been trying to get up-to-date in an airplane with a Garmin 750.  Have the LNAV and LPV figured out but what is an LP approach?  Looked up a few that said LP but did not see anything on the approach chart.

Hi David, take a look at KDXR RNAV 8 and you'll see a LP approach.

LP stands for lateral precision and as the name implies it gives the same lateral performance as an LPV, but doesn't provide vertical guidance. So you can think of it as a more accurate LNAV approach.

Is this what you were thinking off? bottom of the page is the "periodic review" excel spreadsheet which has all approaches they are reviewing by airport. https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/flight_info/aeronav/procedures/reports/

I also found this table but assume this isn't what you're looking for, right?

Publication Dates for New Procedures

New procedures are published for use in the National Airspace System (NAS) every 56 days through the Terminal Procedures Publication (TPP) process. However, procedures can also be published during the interim months through the Operations Change Notice (OCN) process. Corresponding dates for 2018 are:

  • January 4, 2018 (CN)
  • February 1, 2018 (TPP)
  • March 1, 2018 (CN)
  • March 29, 2018 (TPP)
  • April 26, 2018 (CN)
  • May 24, 2018 (TPP)
  • June 21, 2018 (CN)
  • July 19, 2018 (TPP)
  • August 16, 2018 (CN)
  • September 13, 2018 (TPP)
  • October 11, 2018 (CN)
  • November 8, 2018 (TPP)
  • December 6, 2018 (CN)

Data on this page, including the attached spreadsheets, is derived from National Aeronautical Charting Office (NACO) Flight Information Publications. Data is for informational purposes only and should NOT be used as official information in any capacity related to flight operations. For official information, please consult the current Flight Information Publications.

Localizer performance, basically the needle becomes more sensitive the closer you get to the runway. A regular LNAV approach has the same sensitivity for the entire final leg.

After several years of no IFR flying I have been trying to get up-to-date in an airplane with a Garmin 750.  Have the LNAV and LPV figured out but what is an LP approach?  Looked up a few that said LP but did not see anything on the approach chart.

Nope. It was a site where the FAA posted when they expected to complete the issuance of a new approach. My airport is on the list for new GPS approaches and I saw it listed on a site but forgot to bookmark it.

Ah.  Went over to the faa site, the instrument flying handbook. Their 2017 version makes no mention of LP in their description of various approaches.  Just another reason I'm in the dark.

Robert, thanks for pointing one out.  Looked at a couple nearby listed on the above link (SOP) and they are now LPV approaches.

I've flown maybe a hundred NDB, SDF and LDA in addition to VOR and ILS approaches in the past but flying a GPS LPV is like shooting fish in a barrel.

Yes, they are impressive in their simplicity & accuracy:  Add a solid autopilot and it’s almost like machine gunning fish in a barrel.
