auto equivalents

So, at supper tonight at what I consider the world's best fly in restaurant (Les relais, Louisville, KY) I had the conversation with some pilots about what model airplanes correspond to model cars.  We agreed upon cessna 172 (Ford taurus) and even cessna 152 (ford escort).  When it came to Baron's we said Range Rovers.  But when it came to Mooney we were split.

My wife (500 Mooney hours) said Lamborghini

Our friend (100 Mooney hours) said Porsche- I nixed this because of the negative association with the ill fated Mooney with the porsche engine

I said Jaguar- old type, maybe even convertible.

 

Anybody have another opinion n the Mooney or another airplane.  It was fun conversation!

My Mooney and my convertible Jaguar both carry about the same cargo with me and my wife, and get about the same gas mileage. Even though the 4 cylinders in my Mooney have a larger displacement than the 12 in the car.  :P

The seating position is very similar, although the Jaguar has more shoulder room and larger doors.

I have many hours in the Ford Escort and C152...

The C152 was incredibly high powered compared to the ‘82 escort.  With a much better power to weight ratio!

To go anywhere, I needed a third person to split the gas bill...

 

A few decades have passed...

I’ve driven a Corvette... only two seats...

The firebird... four seats but only 280hp... terrible hp to weight ratio...

To match a 310hp, Standing Ovation... it needs at least four seats and have an extreme hp to weight ratio... and cruise in comfort for a long trip...

Side Gs are nice but not critical to Mooney operations...

I rode in a Porsche Cayenne and a Tesla Model S... they could be in the running...

The Chevy Tahoe is similar to the 280hp O...

Lots of power and seats and plenty o’stuff that fits in the back...

No. Definitely a Lotus. Fast, efficient, light and sexy.

I used to liken Mooney's to Porsche's. I've never been in a Porsche but ever since I got the Mustang they are very similar. Bend down to get in. The seat grips you. Low sitting. Feet straight out. Big metal moving bar in the middle when you wanna go fast. Zero legroom in the back. Looks fast just sitting still. And last but not least- everytime you stop, the guy in the Corolla (Cessna) stares at you in resentment

Perhaps I’m the only one here, but I think Mooneys are built to too high a standard to be compared to a British vehicle.

The Porsche has always made the most sense to me.  Seating position low to the floor and relatively narrow in the cabin. Built around business (going fast) and quality.

Alas, I had to sell mine.  The wife wouldn't let me have a Mooney and a Lotus.  I always compared my Elise to a Vans RV.  Sitting in either is like sitting in the bath with the water drained out.  This was my 3rd (and last) Lotus.  Like Mooney, Lotus was constantly looming from one financial disaster to another.

I agree on both points.

I call a Mooney the Porsche 911 of the Sky.   Old school 911, air cooled boxer motor, tight handling, performs much better than you'd expect for the surprisingly low power it makes, pretty Spartan inside, not a lot of room to carry much crap, and very efficient at what it does and it does it well.

I guess it depends on what year we are talking about. I’ve always compared most Mooney’s with steam gauges to a 911 Porsche. In the latter models with glass panels I’m leaning toward Tesla. Both have similar seating position, touch screen glass panels, autopilots, crazy acceleration, awesome lines, smooth ride, efficient and fast.

I'm in the camp that likes to compare Mooneys to Porsches. An older air cooled, Porsche also has that really tight steering which is a lot like the heavy controls of my Mooney. 

I've always thought the Bonanza's like the F33A were more like American muscle cars. They're also fast, but big, heavy, and to hell with the gas milage.

A Cherokee 6 or Lance is the Suburban. And the Cessna Cardinal with the massive doors is like a Chrysler Minivan.

Don, you have great taste in your modes transportation.  I'm too young to have owned those cars but my late father's list is about identical to yours.  

As for Mooney/Cars,.  I think any of the air cooled Porsche encompass what a Mooney is to me.   With the exception of the 914, but that's really a VW.

I'm sure this will be an unpopular opinion, but I've always considered the slower, older Mooneys (J's and back) most similar to a Miata with a rear seat. Since they have a rear seat, maybe compared better to a BRZ/FRS (they actually have boxer 4 cylinders up front too). The newer higher hp Mooney's I compare to a C63 AMG.
