Gear retraction issues

Recommended Posts

Hey, guys.  Hoping to get your thoughts on an issue I've had over the last couple days.

I took my 1969 M20E in for a pitot/static test two days ago and on the way home my gear initially failed to retract.  I hit 110 MPH and they retracted.  I flew home and gear extended no problem.

We put the plane on jacks yesterday and the gear are retracting at 110 MPH.  I flew with mechanic today and they once again failed to retract until 110 MPH.  We  were pretty much certain it was the airspeed pressure switch at this point until we did some retractions/extensions in the air at 3000 ft.  The gear would retract just fine at 90 MPH while at altitude.  We came back and landed, departed again, and the gear would not retract until about 110 MPH.

We are still pretty set on the airspeed limit switch considering it happened immediately after the pitot/static test but the fact that the gear will retract at lower air speeds at altitude does not make sense. Do you guys have any thoughts?  I have no squat switch or bypass mechanism.

Thanks.

Josh

It is possible the guy doing the pitot static test accidentally shocked the static system damaging the airspeed switch.

I agree, but it does not make sense that it will not retract until 110 on take off but will retract at lower airpeeds at altitude?

Does your plane have an ASSS?

I don’t think they were standard on the 69.

It may have nothing to do with the static test.

If ASSS is the same thing as an airspeed pressure switch then yes.  Here is a picture

Maybe you found something we don’t know but I would have held off on a new ASSS just yet. You have to remove the old one anyway so why not take it out and wring it out on the bench?  They are stone simple. It always kills me to spend money that doesn’t solve the issue, though I should be used to it by now. Let us know what you find.

Thats a fair point. The MSC I use is a 2 hour flight, so I just had them buy the part to avoid multiple trips. I figure the part is 50 years old. Wont hurt to replace it.

I had the exact same issue last week. After the IFR recert the gear wouldn't come up until 97mph (up from 85mph before recert). I also have the Dukes 3203-00 and came to the same conclusion that it was the issue. During troubleshooting it retracted at 87mph at 3000ft, but is solid at 97 during takeoff...

Did you end up replacing your dukes?

Josh, did the new air speed pressure switch fix your take-off gear retraction issue?  Do you happen to have P/N and place you bought it?

While we wait for Josh to respond...

Consider placing a call to Dan at Lasar...

MSC and parts available for all Mooney airplanes...  Dan IS the man...

The switch is also or probably OH’able...  searching for who does this type of work shouldn’t be too hard...

There is an article on servicing that switch by a really good Mooney Mechanic... I read it recently, so there is probably a link around here too...

Best regards,

What is MSC?  The industrial supplies distributor?  Mooney something? Thanks

Slow,

I added a few more lines regarding the switch above...

There is some common-ish maintenance that can be done... so a new one may not be required...

They are terribly expensive, brand new...

I gave enough detail, that some basic search should find what you are looking for...

If not, let us know how far you got...

The MSC.... is a Mooney Service Center.... a place you can go to buy all kinds of parts for your Mooney...

Dan at Lasar happens to be the world specialist in all things Mooney part related...

Lasar supports Mooneys around the world...

To find a list of MSCs go to Mooney.com and work your way through the menu system they have... the website is under transition... so it isn’t perfect yet...

Best regards,

-a-

If the gear retraction is specific to an airspeed, obviously the Asss is the most likely culprit and worth checking.  However, I wouldn’t assume it’s the problem without testing.  Especially this time of year (colder) there may be “delayed” retraction events... it may look like the Asss switch is set around 110 or so, but maybe it’s just 10” after gear switch actuation.  This can be caused by sticky limit switches in the belly.  Mine took some LPS 1/2 and toggling, good for another year.  If you have a weight on wheels switch, either the switch or the gear donuts can be a culprit, especially in the cold.

Great seasonal memory Rags!

Its cold out!

We have either the Asss or the squats...

The airspeed sensor switch is in most of the newer Mooneys...

The squat switch is in the first electric gear Mooneys...

The Donuts are temperature sensitive when it comes to their rebound quality...

A good cold day will keep the switch and donuts from working properly...

Either new donuts, or switch calibration can be the answer... switch calibration costs about 1amu less...  :)

PP memories returning only... could be fuzzy memories...

An electric heater on the left main gear will help the pucks expand and hit the switch. Give it an hour or so . . . Don't do this under a leaky tank . . . . But eventually the pucks will need to be replaced. Then it will taxi like a car, and your landings will suddenly be much more graceful.

Hey! Sorry for delay. The airspeed switch did fix this issue. I am out of town but can get you P/N when I get home this week!

Do you happen to have this Part Number or where you got it?

I'm having similar issues and was trying to find the upgraded PN in SB M20-129 PN 950161 for the upgraded switch.
