Folding Bike - Jupiter Bike 2.0

Recommended Posts

Those are cute and small, but I would prefer something a little more robust.  I have been thinking about/looking at something more along these lines:  https://www.amazon.com/ANCHEER-Electric-Mountain-Lithium-Ion-Suspension/dp/B01LETH116/ref=sr_1_21?s=outdoor-recreation&ie=UTF8&qid=1531422130&sr=1-21&keywords=folding+electric+bike

or https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00APBSDX0/?coliid=I1M6ALWL8PDRPP&colid=2SD027B5KTVMU&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

Does anyone have any knowledge/experience with these?

60lbs, both look like a handful to try and hoist into a plane.

The small wheeled folders(like my Tern) do have a little less stability but can be a whole lot smaller folded or at least smaller without pulling wheels and stuff.

Of course, if money was no object I'd go get a Bike Friday, stupendously expensive but fully customizable.

Bike Friday is good, but I just got a Dahon Speed P8 off of Amazon.  It's a great sturdy little bike that I use all around NYC and used to take on the backseat of a rental C182.  I have not tried to fit it into the luggage compartment of my 231 but sure it won't be a problem - removable backseats and all.  These small-wheel electrics may be fine on the apron, but frankly my use for the bike is airfields where there are no crew cars or rentals.  That often mean a mile or more into town on less than perfect roads.   The little bike of the OP just won't work there.

I have my Schwinn Loop that I bought used (CB), and it's 33 lbs.   It's a nice bike and folds up to fit in the hatch, but even at 33 lbs it's a chore to handle it through the hatch, or up on the wing into the back seat.   Stuff like that makes me long for an A36.

I have a Tern Link P24h, not sold anymore, but there are similar ones. 8 speed rear derailleur, 3 speed hub(and a 12lb front ebike hub+battery on order), but mostly I like that it has full racks so I can load my luggage onto it. Longest I've done was 10 miles, on flat roads.

And yes, the photo was taken at one of those fancy FBOs with carpet and toilets that flush.

I have 2 folding Citizen bikes (Toyko) and can only get one in baggage area and that's not easy.  They are good a affordable $219, bike Friday very very pricey.  Looks like they have a new model Rome may be smaller and lighter.

Looks like Jupiter Bike would easily fit at least 2 in the baggage area. Says will go 10 miles, Thats not very far and they are pricey. Liking the size.

We have two Montague folders. With wheels off they go in through the baggage door.  AND they ARE real mountain bikes and ride just great.  I am in MT with them right now.

Wheels in wheel bags...to prevent getting anything dirty. And bikes in bike bags.

I'm touchy about carrying lithium ion batteries in my plane from unknown sources. I'll carry a Jackery brand phone charger with me that use Panasonic cells as they travel with lots of people on the airlines. I carry an expensive EarthX booster pack to jumpstart my plane if I need it, but in contains LiFePO4 batteries which have a much higher thermal runaway/ignition temperature of around 600 degrees vs 300.

Yip, well as one can see from the PIREPs of folks who actually use folding bikes in their planes - none use the electric ones. Apart from the li-ion risk they're not practical for any substantial distance longer than walking from the FBO to the apron.

We just spent two days tooling around Niagara Falls on these Mini Euro Urbano folding bikes.  Folds down nice and compact so we can fit three across in my baggage compartment and they only weigh 24 pounds each.  Easy to get around with these and they are on sale for $350 each.  Get three for one compared to those other bikes.  Are they designed to be ridden off trail and over 100 miles in a day, no...but neither am I...  :D  They are great for getting in and around town though.

Just another option as I have no skin in the game since I have mine already and I'm completely satisfied - as is my family... ;)

Will these fit through the baggage door? I bought a Dahon and a bag and took it to sun n fun once, only to have one of the overzealous motorcycle wannabe Gestapo assholes stop me and harass me about it as I was walking it. The Dahon will not fit through the baggage door and has to go onto the back seat through the main door, is inconvenient to load an unload, and there’s really only room for one.

I can't say 100% for sure, since it's been awhile since I had my Mooney, but I believe they will.

This is the folded up size of the bike:  H-27" L-31" W-12.5

M20E Door Size:  Width = 18.50, Forward Length = 28.50, Rear Length = 26.25 (it;s tapered a little from front to back)

If someone has a Mooney close to the Richmond area, I can bring one of the bikes to try and see if it fits through a standard Mooney door.  :)

Cheers,

Brian

OMG LOL I needed a good laugh today......you are speaking of one or two batteries but understandably I agree.

There are many pilots who carry 10s of thousands of lbs of lithium batteries on a single flight packed by unknown sources. Usually by people who hate the USA.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UPS_Airlines_Flight_6

The report indicated that the fire was caused by the autoignition of the contents of a cargo pallet, which contained more than 81,000 lithium type batteries and "other combustible materials"

I don’t see why it’s so funny.

i work at a university and there was a dorm fire here not too long ago that burnt down a dorm building (no one hurt thankfully) that was traced back to one of those Cheepo “hover boards” that spontsneously burst into flames.

therafter they were banned from the dorms.
