I may fly myself to Chicago tomorrow from Tampa as there are no direct flights and airfare is high. It’s a bit further than I prefer for my standard mission and the weather is less than perfect, but I think I can dodge the buildups and maintain VFR or IFR in VMC. I’m instrument rated, but the IMC looks like there’s a high potential of convective activity.

What FBOs/airports in the area are best? It looks like Gary KGYY has train access for me to get to the convention center and reasonable fuel prices.

So did you make the flight ?

I landed at MDW. My landing was less than perfect having lost sight of the field, having to get assistance from the tower, and those lights being all the way up messed with my depth perception. Next time I’ll dial in the localizer.

Always had good luck with DuPage. It's a bit of a hike from downtown, but no fees and reasonable fuel prices (especially at self-serve). It's also outside of the bravo airspace so you get direct routing and no delays.

+1 for duPage and also for PWK (Palwaukee).  Used both.  PWK is closer to downtown, but sometimes our business is needs to provide some isolation and some distance from downtown so duPage is a good way to do that.   As well, if you are approaching from over Lake Michigan, Chicago controllers will push you down to 4000' as far as 10 miles or so from the shoreline.  Not really in my comfort zone.

DuPage allows you to sneak in from the south at 4,000' all over land.

6 years ago on the way to Oshkosh with a stopover at Chicago I visited what was left of Meigs Field and walked the length and back. Not much was done there with just about no development with plenty of ducks roaming around.

I thought what a waste of an active and useful airfield at a fantastic location.

+1 My wife and I did the same pilgrimage in 2013 as an add on to a business trip where we put down in PWK and stayed downtown.  Nothing but geese droppings all over the area.  Very sad state of affairs.

And our Toronto Island is a very good comparison, as expressed by Drapo.  More commercial facilities than Meigs had, but solid instrument approaches and well incorporated into the Toronto Terminal procedures.  The only problem for me, as a business owner, is that most businesses coming to Toronto will make use of the airport hotels by Pearson International so we really only use Toronto Island for personal activities, not too many business ones.

View is good, but nothing like the one I had when flying out of runway 36 on FS... The only thing that comes close to it is the Toronto Island (Billy Bishop) airport on lake Ontario, where you get a gorgeous view of downtown Toronto!

Toronto Island is a beautiful approach! Burke Lakefront in Cleveland is also great. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and First Energy Field are short walk after landing. We flew up a couple of weekends ago for game 7 of Cavs vs. Raptors. We walked to Quicken Loans Arena and then back after the game.

Chicago politics...

Could be the one needed to reopen Meigs?

Sounds like the opposite of the guy known to have closed Meigs...

told through the jaundiced eye of your favorite national rag... :)

Why the fuck should we care that it's a woman, or a black, or gay? What does this trifecta of identity politics have to do with Lori's ability to effectively govern the city?

It pisses me off that the headlines include the exact things it is illegal to ask or discriminate against, as if it should matter or is newsworthy.

With that said, it would be awesome if Lori would reopen Meigs.

I hate to be a fuddy duddy, but we try to keep the language a little cleaner around here.

I grew up in Chicago, granddad was a member of Mayor Daly's "Irish Mafia" back in the day. The city is, an always has been a den of corruption, I posted earlier about the Meigs last night open,, I flew down with the idea of being the last flight out of Meigs  (along with another 100 other pilots).  Daly Jr. had the field destroyed in the middle of the night and should have been charged for that, as well  as taking the funding for keeping it open for another 10 years and still closing it. From what I hear about the new mayor, I wouldn't  look forward to landing a Meigs anytime soon, word has it she is all about "eat the rich" and higher taxes and redistribution of wealth, the standard leftist agenda etc.

As far as FBO's, MDW is the closest to downtown Chicago, best to take an Uber as the "Orange Line" train while very convenient has experienced some problems with modern  day train robberies (the perps will jump on at one stop, rob the passengers  at gun point and jump off at the next stop).  Gary is located in a rotten area and getting downtown is expensive.

KDPA "DuPage" is an awesome air field, as someone mentioned earlier you can get in under the ORD class bravo, the on field services are great, you can get a room at the Pheasant Run resort adjacent to the field, golf, pools etc. also some great restaurants close by. Its about 55 miles west of the city, but you can take a Metra train downtown from Geneva or West Chicago in about an hour. (much safer than the "EL trains".  Limo or Uber will be $65 to $85.

The problem with reopening Meigs is it would cost big dollars that I'm certain Chicago doesn't have.  And I doubt very strongly that the FAA would be interested in funding the effort after Chicago officials destroyed the airport in the first place.

But every time I fly past it I get a bit depressed.  Where there was a vibrant airport there now is

nothing.  It wouldn't be so sad if they put in a some Museums or an amusement park or something.  But there's just nothing there.  Sad.

Huh? I was there last summer after Oshkosh and there's a really nice park, concert venue, and observatory there. The place was full of people out cycling, walking, fishing, picnicking, etc. I'm not defending the way it was shut down, but it sure seems like Chicagoans are certainly using the space.

I wonder if it was on the ground at Meigs when Meigs was bulldozed and if so, how they got it out?

After Prince Dick ordered the destruction of the runway, stranded pilots were permitted to depart from the parallel taxiway.
