As the title says... any leads or suggestions appreciated!

Repair or exchange.

im fairly sure the engagement coil or the circuit that drives the coil are what is bad on mine.

Try Bevan-Rabell or Mid-Continent Instruments, both in Wichita. Either can likely repair yours.

Some ideas of people that might have been in your shoes...

https://mooneyspace.com/search/?&q=Servo motor repair&sortby=newest

From industrial experience... it might be a perfectly good idea to have the servo OH’d.

I didn’t see any particular resource of a go to servo motor overhauler...

Best regards,

My experience was after an unhappy to be litigated experience with Autopilot Central is that the most economical solution for the motor going bad was only about $1800 for an overhauled up to date mods etc. unit directly from BK..  While I was doing my research on this I did find somebody who overhauled the pittman motors....I think(hope) I saved the link on my ipad.  I will check this evening.  My avionics guy said by the time he would have gone through, tested, repaired, etc everything the overhauled unit was the most economical.  The important thing is he found the problem right away without any shotgunning parts like a certain well regarded repair shop.

B-R doesn't have a comprehensive website, but they have a very capable bench repair shop and are likely less expensive than MCICO. MCICO might have an exchange unit available, though.

The biggest concern about using Bendix King for such repairs is that they'll require any item brought up to the current mod level in addition to any repairs. But some mod updates can be very expensive. Some years ago I sent them a pitch-trim servo that was behind 3 or 4 mods since it was from an '86 and they wanted  in  $4-5K to repair it largely due one of the mods being several thousand. I eventually went with another salvage unit I found and got satisfactorily  bench tested.

I am no expert....I was charged $1.8k for an exchanged pitch trim servo from Honeywell, with everything being brought to latest mods.  They replaced the motor and other bits and pieces so someone is getting the motors repaired or new.  I couldn't tell you which.

here is the company that advertises they repair Pittman motors........no idea on legality of using them or their actual capabilities...  http://www.bigwoodselectric.com/

Interesting page... regarding maintenance of BK servos 177, 178, and 179...

https://www.duncanaviation.aero/intelligence/2013/May/bendix-king-autopilot-100-150-series-servo-maintenance

They have a few pages describing various servo failures related to BK APs...

might be worth comparing to BK...  https://www.duncanaviation.aero/services/components-repairs/

If as you move forward with your King/Honeywell autopilot and you need to repair a pittman motor

The servo motor can be repaired with integrity and experienced people .

Just saying if it is the motor the (servo ) that needs attention try  http://www.bigwoodselectric.com/      They repaired mine in 2012 and it has worked perfect for 700 + hours

The gentleman in charge at that time was Zach... his phone # was 701.642.3145.

Let all of us on MS know how you proceed ..because these legacy AP's need affordable people like bigwoods to service our needs

Don't mess with Texas

Super thanks to all, I had great support from MDoc here on MS & Alan at Autopilot Central & Mooney Factory in getting documentation to troubleshoot my unit.  After a number of hours found the problem.  Mid Continent quoted me 4500 exchange!  A other shops quoted everywhere starting at 1100 plus parts to 1800 for general repair.... whatever that was suppose to include!

Alan said he thought they could repair it based on what I told him I had found for a couple hours labor.

Spent most of the day calling everyone I could find or anyone told me they might have one.

Mid Cont was the only one that said they had one for 4500 exchange, they were also the last one to work on this one in 2013!

Motor works fine only issue was with the engage solenoid.

All is well, hope to reinstalling tomorrow.

I sure hope a decent long term reasonable cost AP is close at hand!

Thanks again everyone for your generous assistance.

Try Redbird Electronics - Dallas, Tx  214-337-8958.  Ralph Ryan knows these servos inside & out.
