Mooney Production

My name is jack wingrove i live in Southampton England

For the last 10 years i have been trying to compile a complete Mooney production list this includes  every air-frame that  

was produced from the M.10 to M.20U.

I am trying to piece together a history of every aircraft built by mooney

S/N/ model/ year built /owners & dates/fates/TT (in due course)

Here below a basic samlpe of my work so far

Jack, no offense or anything, but why on earth are you compiling this information? By way of responding to this you now have my registration number as I don't try to hide that, and you can look it up on the FAA website if you're so inclined.  But I can't imagine too many folks are going to willingly provide this info out to a complete stranger, especially when you haven't even given a reason for your project.

Just my two cents (or tuppence, if you prefer!).

The British have some weird hobbies.  There are "plane spotters" that show up to fly ins here and with down all the tail numbers.  It costs big bucks to get here, so they're obviously serious about it.  And they aren't hurting anyone, I've no objection, I just find it a bit off.

So this guy wants to know about Mooneys.  To be honest, get tail numbers and start looking stuff up on the FAA websites.  Come to the big airshow at Oshkosh, a lot more Mooneys show up than this site has members.

Just like with cars, "model year" and "calendar year" do not coincide. I have a car built in October, but the title is for the model year, not the calendar year. Don't cheapen your 1970 Mooney by calling it a 1969 model.

Now I need to check my data plate and compare against the original logbook. Which flight in there is used as the date? Seems mine has 2 or 3 from the factory pilot. Guess I need to see what they say again . . . . . . .

Well, how about that.  All this time I thought I owned a 1975 M20F, according to the serial number (22-1322) I actually have a 1976.  According to the logs is was manufactured  and completed its test flights in December 1975.  Today is the first time I noticed the "1976" written at the top of page one.

Well, how about that.  All this time I thought I owned a 1975 M20F, according to the serial number (22-1322) I actually have a 1976.  According to the logs is was manufactured  and completed its test flights in December 1975.  Today is the first time I noticed the "1976" written at the top of page one.

Many 76 models were built in late 75. Based on your serial number it should be a 76. The only major difference between a 75 and 76 is the one piece rear window on each side. You have that?

I would like to thank you for all your replies 

I would like to answer some of your remarks .First Jeff it is just a hobby i do in my spare time i first started this project about 20 years ago

due to life and work commitments  i put it on the back burner for a few years but now i'm back on it full swing

The information i collect is for me i have no financial gain or work for anyone .I am trying to build a database of every mooney made

yes it seems strange? i see myself as a aviation historian recording history i do/will share some of the information i get with like minded

fellow historians.There are other historians out there covering many types of aircraft Cessna/Piper/Beechcraft etc i chose the mooney because

it was not covered and i thought it was and is a fantastic aeroplane to cover i hope this helps?

Yes we British are strange we write down tail numbers for a hobby (i am one of those)we also like to photograph all forms of aviation

Airliners/Helicopters/General aviation/Executive/ Microlight/balloons/AND military.

I was only in your fine Country last year in Florida i did a road trip between West Palm and Miami and all point's

in between.Its the 4th time i have been over there and hope to come back some day soon maybe next year and yes it cost big bucks:>(.

I first came over in 1988 and getting round the GA fields was easy but since 9/11 things have changed big time and not so easy now

if at all .

 

I know i can use the FAA website for most information like owners dates fates etc but some aircraft have had more than one owner this is where a lot more research

come in .Some countries like Britain's CAA give full histories of every owner the FAA only gives current.

I am aware of MFR dates AND registration dates.

The biggest problem i have when an aircraft is when it is (cx) cancelled what what happens to it or where it is yes i know a lot are used for spares but there must be

quite a few still sitting around somewhere.

There are a lot of Mooney pics in there!   G-OBAL appears on p.3, in uglier livery.

If you ever get to Arizona, get somebody to take you to the Pinal airport.   It is covered in acres and acres of retired airliners in various stages of disassembly.  It might be the sort of place you'd like.

And I checked the first page of my airframe logbook:   My 77 M20J first flight test was dated 12-10-76, and the next entry for a subsequent flight test was 1-8-77, with a note:  "AD-76-07-12 Bendix Ign Sw Ck OK".    Brand new out of the factory with only the first flight test and they had to do an AD compliance check.  On the ignition switch!  ;)

This flight was delayed for maintenance:

I always like reading the history of the ownership of the planes, especially when picked up at the factory and the sales invoice is shown.

I looked into the background of the three previous owners of mine (found their names on the FAA site) and conducted a Google search on each of them. The first owner revealed that his wife bludgeoned him to death (I kid you not).  I can't remember what happened to the second one but do recall there was a story behind him, and I was able to get in contact with the third owner who was able to furnish me with pictures of the plane from the late 80's, when it had its original factory paint, interior and panel. He now flies an Ovation.

Welcome aboard, Historian Jack!

If you plan to visit the US again, there are a few Mooney events that may be of interest...

Major airshows, like KOSH and SnF...

Mooney specific events like the Mooney Summit and the MAPA homecoming. Both are near each other on the calendar and location.

There are a few regional Mooney fly-ins that can be organized months in advance.  Some occur within a few hours notice...

Jack, I might be able to help with my 1966 M20E serial # 929. The reg # since 3Nov1997 has been N943RW. It left the factory 3Dec1965 as N2566W. On 8Sep1980 it became N8500Z.

I have a list of the 10 previous owners and dates if that is of interest. 

So you only have about 11,000 more Mooneys to account for.
