LED for Tail

Recommended Posts

Going with Aveo engineering lights all around except for the tail.  Would like a less expensive option.

I do not need the 500 dollar Aveo option for the tail, just want a solid white non strobe

Can someone give a part number they have used for the tail....I have a 64 M20c

Whelan or another company?

Thank you in advance

I went with the Whelen Orion 500 but it is still a $400 position light/strobe. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/orion500series.php?clickkey=9780

Another option is to just go with a straight up LED position light: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/whelen14volt.php?clickkey=35397 You will need to check with Whelen to see if the size is correct.

Highly recommend the 71554 series Whelen led.

i just installed it on a 182!! Looks amazing!!

You'll need small diameter heads like cap screws or 4-40 size hardware. As a normal #6 screw or larger rubs the shell of the lamp. You'll see. I used #6 cap screws with machine thread nutplates. Installed sub $250 and TSO'd!!

The metal surround needed painting. But Matty white matches well.

I've heard this is visible for a long way, but this might be better though hasn't been tested yet.

FARs on the rules for lights are pretty fuzzy so long as it doesn't require changing a ballast/function.

Here's what I've experimented with so far:

https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/navstrobesextant1.php

^^^These suck, and packaged the same as the first set you linked (which doesn't really mean anything).   These are the nav-strobe things that are on constant unless you cycle the switch twice, then they go into strobe mode.    If you want them on constant, just turn them on and they're fine.  The problem is they're pretty dim.

https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/wingtipLED11-14884.php

^^^These are pretty nice, and decently bright.   These do not have a nav-strobe function; they're just on all the time when turned on.

https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/navstrobesextant40.php

^^^These are also nav-strobe and much brighter than the nav-strobe set linked above and about the same brightness (judged by my eyeball) as the middle set linked above.   They come with a sheet stating that they're compliant with TSO-C30c.

FWIW, I couldn't get the strobe function to work on my airplane with either nav-strobe set, although they work great on other airplanes in which I've seen them installed.   Just don't put them in strobe mode at night.

I have the 40 watt version in your last link. Won them as a door prize at the Mooney Summit. I like them a lot and the strobe function works just fine in my 67C. Certainly brighter than the original bulbs. Best of all, they were free.

I know, I know picky picky but here we go again. Strobe flash, They ain't legal to install in certified airplanes. Your AI might ding them come annual time (he should or his license is up for FAA action) or the feds might do the same come ramp inspection time (remote possibility). The owner can get whacked because he's responsible for the airworthiness of the airplane and who ever installed them can get whacked for installing non-certified parts (you did sign off the log book when you installed them didn't you? If not another violation). Again, I know, picky but just trying to keep folks out of court.

decided to go with the Aveo Engineering Red Baron beacon and their strobes.  I do not fly much at night if at all so I decided to save 360 bucks and go with a solid non strobing white LED tail light from Whelan.

Will upload pictures when installed

Thanks all.....
