Southern or Central CA Fly-In - Location?

We're coming up on 9 months since the Harris Ranch Fly-In last May. Most of you have been around much longer than I and to many more airports than I have so put out some suggestions on a fun location for a Fly-In. I am thinking late March or Early April? If we can nail down a location first that people would want to fly to then we can come up with a date.

L05 is an interesting place to fly into, but there isn't really many resources on the airfield.  There is a restaurant on site, but there is no fuel.  There are also hills around the field that require tight traffic patterns.  Another suggestion 15 minutes south of L05 is KTSP that has restaurants within walking distance (Redhouse BBQ is excellent), fuel, and a maintenance shop run by a fellow Mooney owner whose hangar is basically a J3 Cub museum.

I've always liked San Luis Obispo. Very scenic area, and they have a pretty good restaurant on the field, too.

I second San Luis Obispo. I often take guests there. Park at the base of the restaurant (Spirit of San Luis). The terminal at KSBP has all the major car rental companies, and many motels to stay overnight. The town of San luis Obispo has many shops and restaurants. Great place to overnight and explore. Short drive to Moro Bay on the coast.

Does San Luis Obispo see much of a marine layer? If it's a lunch time fly-in I would think it wouldn't be much of a factor but thought I would ask.

Im in for wherever, its great fun to get a bunch of Mooneys together! Catalina is always a fun place to fly into as we did several years ago, but a new place would be great too. Heres some thoughts

  • Catalina AVX
  • Watsonville WVI
  • Columbia O22
  • Camarillo CMA (would be packed going in on a weekend)

From my experience (two of my kids did their grad work at SLO (Cal State) and I flew there frequently), it was rare that there was a marine layer that far inland by 9-10 AM.

If you are considering San Luis Obispo, I think nearby Oceano airport (L52) is more interesting.  Small strip right next to the beach.

If we are trying to balance between NorCal and SoCal, I think Santa Ynez is also viable.  The casino will send a van to get pilots from the airport.

For a SoCal biased meetup, I agree @JohnBCAtalina and Camarillo suggestions.

I'd Strongly consider Oceano (L52). Great little airport located right next to the beach. And there's a terrific Diner about a 3 minute walk from the airport.

The rock & Roll diner. No landing fee but a 15 dollar overnight fee. 100LL is on the field. The airstrip is pretty short at 2100ft, but there aren't any

obstacles in the way. Flying up from John Wayne (KSNA) in an old and slow 172 takes me about an hour and 35 mins give or take

doing 105 knots and its right at the midpoint coming from Socal Or the Bay area.

Will do a BBQ for Mooniacs at KPRB if folks want it.  Will setup in my hangar.  Else there is a most excellent restaurant on the field if a FREE BBQ isnt interesting... Fly Fast Fly Safe... phil

KPRB is a great choice. I used to fly there often when there was an earlier “white table cloth” restaurant there. Slow service, but good food. I stopped going there when the restaurant closed, and some sort of deli took over. Good to hear that a new restaurant has taken over. Hey, a free BBQ sounds wonderful. Just pick a date, and I’ll be there - even glad to contribute to the costs of the BBQ.

This might be the most fun. It would definitely lend itself more to visiting than eating in a restaurant. I think we could get those coming in to help bring drinks/chips/etc or chip in to offset the cost of the BBQ. In March I'm available the 17th or any Saturday in April.

Just to suggest a few dates: March 17 (St Patrick’s Day), or March 18, or the following weekend: March 24th or 25th. The idea of a BBQ instead of a restaurant should allow for more socializing. The Estella Museum itself worth the trip.
