Sandel EHSI SN3308 For Sale

2.11 requires about 10 more wires plus an external annunciator. So the extra labor and cost of the extra part for the annunciator probably  offsets the savings from not getting the 2.3 version plus you have more panel space taken up by an annunciator. The 2.3 is ARINC429 which is digital and annunciates LPV And the marker beacons on the screen.

2.11 does in fact have annunciations and 3 light marker beacon. 2.11 does in fact support Arinc connections. I keep going back to the manual when this stuff is put out here and it looks like it is not accurate. Someone correct me if the text I posted below from the 2.11 manual and install manual Version J! Please explain further what 2.11 does and what 2.3 does further.

 

The Sandel Avionics SN3308 packs the essential features of an EFIS
nav display into a standard three-inch instrument, at a fraction of the
cost of a full EFIS. By combining the functions of an HSI, an RMI, a
moving map and a Stormscope® display into one instrument, the
SN3308 ties together the critical elements of situational awareness.
And by adding to that a 3-light marker beacon and GPS annunciator
displays
, the SN3308 becomes the virtual equivalent of an EFIS nav
display, sized and priced for GA cockpits.

The lower display area presents the numeric data associated with the
two bearing pointers. This includes the nav source, bearing and
distance (if available). The upper section of this area also contains a
display of the marker beacon lights and the GPS annunciators,
if
configured.

CYAN Information associated with the LNAV (GPS
or loran) receiver(s)
GPS annunciators: HLD, PTK and APPR
(II Morrow GPS only)

AMBER Heading bug and associated data
GPS annunciator: MSG and WPT. Also
HOLD
(Garmin only)

1.4.3 GPS Annunciators
Discrete annunciator inputs are provided for ARM, ACT, WPT or HLD, MSG,
OBS/LEG Mode, and Parallel Track. Connect the pins appropriate to the installed
receiver and select the receiver type on the LNAV maintenance page. See
GPS/SWITCH/ANNUNCIATORS Installation Drawing for the complete matrix of
outputs and annunciators.
Discrete control outputs are provided for APPR ARM, OBS Mode (King KLN90) and
HOLD (II Morrow). These are open-collector Darlington outputs which pull to within 1
volt of ground. Ensure these outputs are compatible with the associated receiver.
The Garmin GNS430 uses ARINC-429 for the annunciator functions so no discrete
connections are used.

1.4.10 GARMIN GNS430 GPS/VOR/LOC Combination Receiver
The complete interface between the SN3308 and the GNS430 can be done using the
ARINC 429 ports.
The ARINC 429 data carries all GPS and VOR/LOC data, resolver
information and flags & annunciators.

Ok I had to do more reading.  The 2.3 version displays GPS INTEG on the display for a WAAS approach.  As well  as GPS vertical guidance and waypoint annunciators. If you don’t have 2.3 you need a separate annunciator.  And I don’t think it displays GPS vertical guidance, although you may be able to wire up the analog up-down signal wires.

OK, it says right in your post on the last line that 2.1 and 2.3 both do WAAS guidance it's just the integrity annununciator that is missing and if your WAAS GPS is in a certain view of the pilot you don't need the separate annunciator. If it is not, then you just need a single LED and placard for that one item. Your post also says version 2.1 supports Arinc 429 interfaces for GPS guidance (Horizontal and Vertical). I appreciate the input here but lets stick to information that we are sure about before giving advice about much more expensive wiring and you need a whole other annununciation panel that takes up space and money if you don't have 2.3. The post you offered contradict what you typed. 2.3 may offer options that someone doesn't even need and someone may only want a 2.1 version without the extra expense. Facts should dictate that decision.

I’ve been through all this before I decided on G5s.    Software 2.3 is required for LPV approaches (glideslope).   2.1 allows only localizer performance gps approaches.  

Firmware upgrade is prohibitively expensive around $2k. And they will want to do the LED upgrade too.

Ok so I have a Sandel SN3308 appropriately priced with 2.11 software that is a great device for the price and fairly easy to install. Anyone interested should ask any questions they like about it's condition or anything else about it and I will answer based on my factual knowledge. If I don't know the answer I won't be able to answer it or attempt to    I do not have a G5 or Aspen or anything else that might have different features than this SN3308 for sale. I will not be going to other post that have items for sale and be talking about what they don't do or what product I would buy instead of them. If someone whats to start a new post about what the Sandel SN 3308 does not do or what they would buy instead maybe there will be some interest in having that discussion.

No LED upgrade available for the SN3308.  I have a gyro and fluxgate to go with this 3308 if anyone one is interested.  You will also need the dimmer pot and knob - although generic one would work.  I still like these a lot, and am installing one in a C172 - cascading down from a Seneca.

The SN3308 interfaces with a lot of avionics and autopilots - something the G5 does not.

I should point out that since you posted this in the Avionics/Panel Discussion section, discussion is actually the expected outcome.  I've actually found the discussion quite interesting, even if I'm not planning on buying it.

You are correct I did post this in the discussion area. I have re-posted it in the correct place. Lets continue this discussion. I called Sandel and got it from the horses mouth. All of the functions of the 2.3 update for WAAS guidance can be achieved on the 3308 with 2.11 software if hooked up appropriately. We used my GNS480 as an example and he viewed the diagram for the Garmin GNS480 install manual. He said (Sandel Tect Support) if hooked up according to the diagram in the install manual then the 3308 2.11 would have all the same functions as the 2.3 upgrade except for some of the annunciators. The GPS would have the annunciators and if the radio where in the appropriate acceptable IFR field of view then the annunciators on the GPS are acceptable. I have attached the acceptable FOV for the GNS480 and a picture of the diagram. So a few more wires and pins are required if you install with 2.11 as opposed to 2.3. (2.3 software upgrade is $1700) So it looks like maybe 17 more wires @ 3 feet  = 51 feet of wire and 34 connectors  =  $20-$30 is much less than the update. This also makes a SN3308 with 2.11 a much better deal if your GPS is within the IFR FOV. Worst case with the 2.11 is an annunciator panel which I've seen for a few hundred dollars as removed but probably not necessary for most planes. .

Someone still has to hook up the 17 wires plus an annunciatior with another dozen wires or so, which is why most people paid an extra 400-500$ and buy a v2.3 SN3308.  It’s cheaper than the labor and simpler too  

I think you’ll need the annunciator for the GTN and GNS series navigators.

Yeah, reading your post I learned that most cases don't need annunciators. Most GA don't have them and don't need them. Looking at that actual document that I posted from a GNS with the measurements would you need one? Look at the distances for when they are required for a GNS. Also how much will they charge to put wires in when they already are putting 4 sets in the same places already. Plugs opened up where they need to go just have to add some to where they already are. Looks like 2.3 units are way more than 400-500. I see prices in the mid 2k - 3k. Seriously, cut 3 foot of wire, crimp micro D-sub pin on one end D-sub on the other, P7 Pin 24 to P1 pin 13. repeat 16 more times.  How much extra labor? 2 hours tops maybe. We are talking about installing a unit right. Paying labor to install 2.3 or paying labor to install 2.11 with a some extra wires in the same place.
