Headed to Vegas - Recommendations

Recommended Posts

I've got a work conference in Vegas the week of January 29th. And I'm planing on taking the Mooney. Last time I was in Vegas with the Mooney, I based at North Las Vegas and was able to use Snoopy's hangar as she was out of town with her Mooney.

I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for which airport I should base at for a week?  I'll probably arrive either Saturday or Sunday.

And thanks.

I assume your conference is down town somewhere. Henderson or North Vegas are good locations for that. Flying into Vegas I prefer Henderson because they have a free shuttle to the strip and it’s a secure airport. North town isn’t the best area but it’s just as close to the strip. I live in Henderson if you need help with anything.

I agree with Henderson.  Since I started flying into Vegas it was initially McCarran when prices were quite reasonable and very convenient - but that didn't last. Then it was VGT, but these days Henderson wins easily with the free shuttle to the strip hotels as well as easy car rental access.

Its been a while for me, but I recall needing to call ahead to reserve a seat on the shuttle or you would lose out.

I liked KVGT. Landed there this March. Flew in from the south on flight following. Wish I would of had someone with me to take pictures going over the strip and LAS. They knock off a nights stay if you buy fuel 24 security as well and a nice diner. I mainly landed there because it was closer to where I was staying. Rented a c172xp out of Henderson in 05 to fly over Hoover Dam if anyone cared:) @gsxr we should get a group of Mooney’s to meet up in Vegas later this year when you don’t have to work.

How about a get together in the PacNW around the end of June/first of July?

I'm going to be up there with my Mooney going to Alaska.

+1 HND.  I used to be tied down at HND until I found a hangar at Boulder City.  I never took the shuttle but it's only a $20-25 dollar Uber from HND to the strip.  VGT to the strip gets traffic at certain times of the day and it can take an hour.  HND is always only a 15-20 minute ride from the strip.

Btw, anyone here remember the shorter 5,000' 19L runway at KLAS...back in the days when you could land there VFR no problem....??

Yep, kept us out f the way, coming in from atis sky clear Vis  100 miles 17T descend to 8000 direct Showboat casino tower, turn left number 3 for airport, easy taxi to general parking, wow not now.
