Today's flight for 2018

Nice! My oldest son has been serving a mission for church the past 21 months and comes home in November. His areas have been in North Carolina and Virginia. We are planning a cross country for next summer to go back and tour his areas and visit the people he met while there. A side trip out to KFFA is on the agenda.

That sounds GREAT! Our CFI tour guide warned about squirrelly winds due to the surrounding trees, so have your game face on. KFFA is in excellent shape and the parking ramp and pilot area is nicely done. I'd definitely land there for sure and will probably do the same cross country in a few years. On the ground at KFFA, you will be super close to the monument and don't have to worry about driving and the traffic. I highly recommend staying for a few days for the great seafood! We ran out of time to try all of the restaurants.

Trying to catch up on things, a bunch of flights to get to but this one was just last Saturday. We went back to Big Bear and had breakfast at the Barnstorm Restaurant on the field. Great views of the runway and the food was good, although the portions were about half the size of Thelma's up the street and the same price.

Had a nice 3 hour flight to the unfortunately damp NC coast today. Alabama and Georgia were clear and sunny, and 62°F at 9500 msl this morning. Clouded up over SC, and I descended to 7500 approaching the NC line then dodged north around a heavy buildup. (Stay VFR in convective weather, embedded CBs are no fun!)

Once east of Lumberton, skies cleared below me and we descended to my favorite grass strip. Wish I'd thought to have my wife film the landing, but she did take some shots of the field.

This was on approach, we landed over the trees at the top. Turning around took gentle turns and full throttle to not bog down. It was recently mowed, but that end of the field doesn't get much traffic, since parking is at the other end. The further I taxied, and the closer I stayed to the middle, the less throttle was required. Looks like the Life Flight helicopter is gone now . . .

The sea breeze is pretty nice, I'd guess 12-15 mph, and the skies have opened up. The front that should have passed last night stalled off the coast, but must be moving again now. 

Looking forward to more sun, sand and fresh seafood. Time to rinse off the saltwater for supper, and hit the docks for fresh shrimp in the morning.

Had a fantastic time flying into Oshkosh with the Mooney Caravan. Left Thursday. Departed 27 and flew runway heading for a few miles before ATC turned me east and basically took me over the airport. Here is a pic just before entering the cloud deck. fc17b2a2fed2f09d960a159602d312d6.jpg

With work in Chicago on Thursday morning and tickets to the Cubs game in the afternoon, I elected to leave OSH on Wed before the storm came in. It was a pretty uneventful departure. But unusual in that I never stopped moving once I started up in the North 40. It was a straight taxi all the way to the pavement, then turn on Alpha, and OSH Tower immediately clearing "the Mooney on Alpha" for takeoff runway 27.

The next day was an excellent Cubs game followed by early Friday morning departure for Texas and home. @"Chocks", Wade, and I took the VFR corridor down the lake shore before turning south. It's a spectacular view of Chicago and don't miss it if you get the opportunity.

This caps off an epic month of July with the Mooney. We flew 7725 miles and I put 48:01 in the log book.  She's now headed to annual with JD at SWTA and I'm heading back to work so I can pay for another month like that next year.

I'm feeling very fortunate and thankful to have such a good airplane and the time and means to use it.

Wife and I heading back from AirVenture 2018. KHAE was hosed with rain so I took her to Des Moines to visit with my daughter. She was pretty tucker'd out and snoozing comfortable in her new Clarity heads

I took my wife and sister to Mackinaw Island yesterday.  It was for my wife's birthday, but a day late due to taking a medical flight on Monday into Midway for a cancer patient from the U.P.  Anyway, it was kind of neat, as the last trip to the island a couple years ago was posted here as well, after a pretty focused run of time on the Lancair and knowing I should spend some time with my wife.  I took a similar picture, by the airport sign, as last time with my wife near the sign (on the left) except the backdrop plane is now the Lancair.  

I saw 3 Mooneys on the ramp.  Not sure if any are Mooney Spacers.  Also saw a twin engine (piston) Dornier.  I've never seen one of these before.  Pretty cool looking airplane.

Nice!  I’m planning on going there sometime this fall with my aeronautical engineering major son.

They just wrapped up the airshow at Offutt AFB where I keep my plane.  We got the boot and had to keep our planes elsewhere, as they put some of the show aircraft in the hangar the aero club and I keep ours.  When I came back this morning, Kent Pietsch’s Jelly Belly was on the ramp.  Which would you rather fly?? :lol:

Just the angle. Last spring I actually verified the props track perfectly with a pile of sand on the ground and then I recently had the props balances and the right one needed no weights at all, it was right on.

Had a good flight with awful haze yesterday. Visited Spruce, oil has gone up again but also picked up other things I needed.

The CAF Museum is, of course open on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday . . . But again, nice parking on the ramp.

Finally got back in the air...(Oh what a feeling!). Was just kissing 80º at the airport and the tires were visibly low. Air Hawk put about a pound in the nose and then died. By that time the fuel truck had arrived and after fueling I asked if the compressor was working--it wasn't and in 9 years at KBPT it never has :lol:. The lineguy offered to bring the firetruck back and since he seemed more anxious than me to go fetch it, I said sure. It has to be the most expensive compressor on the planet, but after a few minutes all three tires were happy again. By then it was getting steamy so I got in the air about 9 AM. Super hazy, but a great flight nonetheless. A squeaker landing so she put the step down for me!
