Lots of great story's and flights from last year. Hope this year brings more of the same and that we all have a great and safe 2018. Hope we get more Mooney posts this year as well as all other flights and story's of flight.

Come on Hank. Today I used my 21f garage to warm up after spending 30min swapping out my truck battery in the driveway this morning. -11f here. If it were 27 I would be riding my bike to the airport to go flying.:D

Well I'm happy to start the year with a flight on day one. Just another groceries run to WLW but the air was absolute smooth and even though a bit of haze you could see the Sierra mountains off in the distance.  Not too many folks out today temps were mid to upper 50's and really a great day to be in the sky. As always Snoopy performed well giving us a trouble free trip. I think it's a kick that we can fly our Mooney to take care of our needed supplies. I know it's not as exciting as most Mooney flights but hey we still have to accomplish all the required elements of a flight we take off we climb we cruise we descend we approach and we land.

I had another cold flight this afternoon.  The wind was blowing 14kts which did not help the 9 dF temps.  I reprogrammed my K factor on my JPI to hopefully close the gap between actual and indicated amounts.  It was about 1.8 gal conservative per tank over the last 4 fill up’s.  Made the mistake of leaving my gloves behind and it took a few mins to get my hands working again when I got back into the plane.  Took a picture of the Three Rivers Airport (KHAI) as I was curious about snow removal with my name currently on the waiting list for a hanger.  It was an enjoyable first flight of the year. CB0E7CF3-F8E9-47E0-805A-A09DED0DB157.thumb.jpeg.5628f9f48236a8ff4cee3b9a0b4998e0.jpeg

Did not think I would get to fly yesterday as we had other things to do. Our unofficial daughter returned from spending the holidays with her boyfriend and my wife knowing that I was pouting cuz I didn't get to fly suggested I take them for a short airplane ride. I asked her young man if he had ever been in a small plane and only time was in a 182 to jump out on a tandom parachute experience. He was very excited to go. We just flew a local flight around the area and I let him fly the plane for a while he really enjoyed the flight and send some video to his younger brother bragging on the opportunity to fly an airplane.

I did pattern work last week before the cold hit. I know it is not something to brag about, but when younfly as little as I get to, pattern practice is exciting. I did a total of seven touch and goes on two different runways all with a 15 degree crosswind.  I was behind the plane and flaring high on the first four, but my last three were good. Is was happy with that.

Last flight of the old year and first flight of the new year on New Year's Day. Flew to Arizona and before flying home gave 2 sisters, 1 brother-in-law, 6 nieces and nephews their first ride in a small plane and another brother-in-law his first ride in a small plane since he was a little kid. It was great fun! More pictures and the write-up on my blog.

A little late to post this from last Wednesday.  A friend flew me down to Georgia to pick up my plane from the avionics shop.  We flew back as a flight of two.  It was a lot of fun seeing his sweet beech 35 along side.  Not so great photos though.   Some day, we will take pax along with good cameras.  We stayed low at about 148ktas..  he had his pulled back just a little bit.   We could have gone faster if I had stayed in is wake the whole way.   It’s amazing how much the wake improves speed for the same power setting.

Well I’ve got three flights in so far and two of them cross country’s. Flew to Bend this morning to pick up some stuff for the house remodel and took an aspiring pilot with me. Took my son back to Orlando so he can start his second semester at UCF.  Moments like this make having your own plane worth it!  Four hours of flight time vs 10-12 hours of driving. 

 

Being on Christmas break for 5 weeks takes its toll.  LOL.  The second pic is Gainesville.

he's just grateful he didn't have to drive.  Of course he may be embarrassed to be seen with that polka dot pillow.  :lol:

The 9th was when I finally go AL up and out.  A new Concorde Battery with a freshly painted battery box.  Got 3 years out of the Gill.   Flew over to Hearne to see all the FEMA (our tax dollars) sitting at the airport not helping the people that need them

It was a dark and windy night... ok, it was a sunny and windy day on the coast. So I decided to go inland to a few new(to me) airports I had wanted to check out. I even brought along my video camera, which didn't get any useful audio, and stopped recording several times and needed to be restarted.

I headed from Newport(KONP) to Sisters Eagle Airport(6K5) which has a camping area I wanted to see. Then I headed to Lake Billy Chinook State(5S5) which is really more of an airpark, but I did manage to get the camera working:

Then I headed to Prineville(S39) where every plane in the area was apparently flying and breaking off the 45 a couple times for traffic I couldn't spot and realizing that there were 2 similar sounding red and white skywagons on frequency(at least I think there were, we have proper callsigns for a reason folks). I said screw it and continued to Bend(KBDN) where I had planned to get fuel. After I had worked out my whole 'left vs right' and 'east vs west' problem someone ended up on the runway with a flat. So I headed over to Albany(S12) to get fuel, and managed to actually land there.

Then I headed back to Newport where the winds were favoring runway 02 at a sporting 060 18G24 or so(peak gusts were 26 I think)

Oh well, 3 hours, 2 new airports at least(and really the more interesting ones).

Flew N1084L to Troutdale, OR and left her with Greg at MSC Advanced Aircraft for annual.  1.4 hour flight with 25 knot headwind. Surface winds were light except at KTTD, 25 G 30 right down runway fortunately. Strange funnel effect down Columbia River gorge.  My hangar neighbor picked me up in his RV 7-A.  Not a comfortable fit for my 6’3” body. Cascade volcanoes in photos.
