Fluorosilicone Fuel Cap O-ring Kits

I found this article in the Nall Report about an aircraft that crashed due to fuel contamination. One of the reasons was because of bad fuel caps o-rings. Even if you don't pickup some of these kits, make sure that you continue to inspect your o-rings and when they start to wear down, replace them!

Theres been a lot of planes crashed due to bad fuel cap o-rings. Mooneys are particularly succeptible due to the water running right down the wing and into the edge of the flush cap.

Same with Beech aircraft. I have been told that Cessna used flush mounted fuel caps for a while but because of fuel contamination they went to a different cap.

If I use PayPal do you want me to choose business or friends and family? Business choice takes a cut of the money.

Thanks, Kevin

Kevin,

I prefer friends and family. Afterall, we’re all pilot and aircraft owner friends!

That’s what I thought. We are all one big Disfuntional family. Going over to the hangar to verify my P/N. I will have my order in today. Thanks Kevin

If you have any questions you can email me at gallagheraviationllc@gmail.com. You can send a picture of the bottom of your fuel cap just to confirm.

Merry Christmas everyone! I am home for the holidays and I sold out of the stock that I brought home with me. Any additional orders for Shaw 531/431 kits will not be able to ship until January 2nd. I do still have some Gabb and Shaw 431 kits up for grabs but you usually don’t find those kinds of caps on Mooneys. I appreciate the understanding and I wish all of you happiness for the holidays!

Just put my new blue ones in during annual this weekend. Thought the old orings looked pretty good, until they bent a little getting them off, and the outside (exposed face) was badly, badly cracked . . . Now I'm good for a long while.

Two things:  1) pay attention to orientation when putting the cap back together. Mine goes two ways, wrong and right. 2) And use the next smaller size cotter pin than the one that co es with the orings, I couldn't get both arms through the hole in the bolt when going through a slot in the castle nut.

But I sure am glad to have them! Gave your card to my A&P/IA, as he was interested.

I am offering highly durable fluorosilicone o-ring kits for your various fuel caps. Please PM me or respond to this thread with your interest to include type and quantity. I will PM you to get your shipping information and arrange payment.

These fluorosilicone o-rings offer superior durability to help your fuel caps keep the fuel in and to keep water out compared to your less superior rubber nitrate o-rings, which have to be replaced frequently. I will be offering kits for Shaw 531/431 caps, Shaw 416 caps, Shaw 457 caps, Gabb caps, and D’Shannon 15 gallon screw type fuel caps. Prices and contents are below. These prices also include shipping. CSOBeech has a great writeup on these o-rings at http://www.csobeech.com/fuel-caps.html. Installation is pretty straight forward but there is additional guidance on CSOBeech.
Kits provide standard aircraft parts acceptable under 14 CFR §21.9 for a FAA certificated mechanic to install two military specification fluorosilicone type o-rings on Shaw 531,457, 431,416, or Gabb style fuel caps. Kits are eligible for installation by a licensed mechanic as a minor alteration under 14 CFR §1.1 and §21.93(a) as it has “no appreciable effect on the weight, balance, structural strength, reliability, operational characteristics, or other characteristics affecting the airworthiness” of the aircraft. No STC, Form 337 submittal or FSDO field approval is required per FAA Order 8900.1 Figure 4-67. A §43.9 airframe logbook entry is sufficient to document this alteration and return the aircraft to service. Fluorosilicone are a much more durable material and will last longer than original Buna-N (Nitrile) rings found in Shaw and Gabb fuel caps. Fluorosilicone can withstand a broader range (-100 to 350 degree Fahrenheit) whereas Buna-N has a lower temperature range (-70 to 180 degree Fahrenheit). The manufacturers of the fluorosilicone o-rings are ISO17025 certified. Fuel caps should be inspected for continued airworthiness per your respective aircraft repair manual.

I installed all new fluorosilicone o-rings on my four fuel tanks on my M35 Bonanza about a year ago and I have not had water in my tanks yet. My cousin left the Bonanza out on the ramp during monsoon season in Panama City Beach FL, this summer and water got into the static lines but nothing in the tanks! Not only were the old rubber nitrate breaking down on the big o-rings, the little ones were in poor shape too.

Kits Available: The kit includes both the outer and the often overlooked inner plunger ring. If either are not working correctly, they can let water into your fuel tanks. Each kit also includes the correct cotter pins for the castle nut on the bottom of your fuel caps.

I have a m20k. In the parts bok it shows a locking cap but mine isn't. I'm assuming I need the same rings for the one I have. It don't say the key is an option put I'm not sure what happen to it. The listed number is ms29513-338 and ms29513-14.  Maybe I should take a picture of it. Let me know what u think. If u need to call me my number is6182500769. Thanks Tim

To help speed things up, the part number on the cap itself is what determines the seal requirement.

If you have it.  Otherwise, a quick trip to the airport may be needed... :)

A quick photo of the underside of the cap, with all of the writing legible, worked for me.

Equip your airplane with the best! It's almost flying season so make sure your fuel caps are maintained well. Replace those old o-rings with some new rings today! I have plenty of stock and I usually ship the next business day after receipt of payment.
