Any mooneys that can carry 800 pounds 800 miles?

800nm, @175kts GS, takes an O 4.6 hours in cruise to complete...

Burning about 15gph It would use about 70 gallons of 100LL, or 420 pounds

The O has over 1k# UL. If you load it with 800# of people, you only have Just over 200# or 33 gallons of fuel.

About half of what you need to go the distance...

So... no, you can't fill the seats and the tanks and be within WnB.

Nice try though... your four big friends aren't going to want to stick it out for that long of a flight without wanting to stretch their legs either...

Plan B: fuel stops... how many do you want?

Best regards,

800nm, @150kts GS, takes a fast C 5.3 hours in cruise to complete...

Burning about 10gph It would use about 52 gallons of 100LL, Which is full up for the C.... 312 # of fuel.  And doesn't account for T/O and climb FF...

The C has near 1k# UL. If you load it with 800# of people, you only have Just over 200# or 33 gallons of fuel.  These would have to be Ideal people.  They have mass, but no volume.  :)

About half of what you need to go the distance...

So... no, you still can't fill the seats and the tanks and be within WnB in a C.  Realistically you can't get two, 200 pounders back out of the back seats of a C either...

Its two guys, two gals and all the stuff. This past weekend in a friends T210 it was right at the 800 pound number. I'll be making this trip often so I'm curious if there is something better. I know some of the Mooney's claim to have 1500ish + mile range, figuring about half that would allow about 800 pounds of people and stuff. T210 took 75 gallons to make the trip there and about the same coming back (4 hours 15 mins with headwind...). KMOD-KTIW Thought maybe there was a mooney that could do it, maybe i'm just dreaming.

What engine was powering the 210?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cessna_210

The Mooney family is all about speed and efficiency.

The single engine cessna family has left out both speed and efficiency.  The Cessna thick wing design is great for lifting weight, but terrible for speed.

I flew KCCR - KSJN - KHYI last weekend. The KCCR - KSJN leg was actually 766 nm and the KSJN - KHYI leg was 756 nm. My M20K burned right at 58 gal on the first leg and about the same on the second leg (headwinds).

That's 350 lbs of fuel used. I only have 850 lbs UL right now, but will have the Encore done soon which will add 230 for a total of 1080 lbs UL - 350 = 730 lbs payload.

But...

1. I was at FL210 - lower would have taken more fuel.
2. I was 75 degrees ROP - LOP would have been less fuel more range.

Using the R example again....

Standard tanks carry 100+ gallons of fuel.

Cruising LOP to maximize distance.  165 kts ground speed using less than 13gph...

That would be roughly 7.7 hours of flying, covering more than 1,200nms

Extending the tanks with the available extra 30 gallons.  The 130 gals would last 10 hours...covering well over 1500 nmiles.

Unfortunately, 130 gallons uses up 780 LBs of UL...

You would need to seek some significantly lighter friends...  :)

Best case scenario you're looking at about 200lbs of fuel in a 201 with 800lbs of jello. That's 33 gallons. That's enough for 2.5 hours at 160kts for 400nm or about 6.6 hours at 90 knots for 600nm. With comfortable reserve, that's basically just enough for taking people for a local ride.

On the other hand I can actually take 2 people 1500nm nonstop with reserve at 140ktas or 1000nm in 6.5 hours at 160ktas. Or 3 people around Cuba and back without having to buy communist gas!

From Modesto to Tacoma Narrows is 583nm, that with a 13kt headwind 4h 6m and 41.2 gals of fuel.  So if I started with 50gals, would leave me a useful load of 600lbs.  Not quite the fuel burned, but not the load the 210 can carry.  But than my wife has a 2 hr bladder so stopping for her I could carry less fuel and add more along the way.  Just not quite what the 210 can do.  But than my 231 is way sexier than any 210.

Pritch

P.S.  I can do it round trip at 76.1 gals, lets see a 210 do that.

My T210N would carry 820 pounds in the cabin with all 120 gallons of fuel in the 4 tanks.

In the real world no four people want to sit in there five hours straight.

If you want to carry 2 couples 800 miles without risking divorce you need a plane that will do it in under 3 hours. Or a plane with an enclosed lavatory.

This is where Clarence @M20Doc comes in to discuss the greatness of one particular ship he is familiar with... 400hp has some value when attached to a big thick wing... :)

You must be referring to the Airvan when you say 400 HP and a thick wing.  The Comanche has a laminar flow wing, not unlike a Mooney.

Any mooneys that can carry 800 pounds 800 miles (no reserve) while staying below 15k and above 160 knots? Nonstop..

Sounds like a job for a Comanche 400, mine carries just under 1500 pounds and would be loafing at 160 KTS.

If the reported numbers are accurate on my new-to-me Screaming Eagle, it'll do that. Of course. There's the usual trade-off: Speed, range, load-hauling capacity, pick two. I am told I might count on 182 knots TAS at 15-16 gph, UL somewhere around 1000 pounds, tanks hold 86 gallons all the way topped. But I've been told that sharing a Mooney's back seat, even a nicely upholstered one with leg room, quits being comfortable after 3.5 hours. Especially if somebody had a second cup of coffee earlier.

I've also noticed that hardly anybody sticks to baggage weight limits.(Outrageous case in point: I once made an Angel Flight couple repack for their two-day trip to see big-city eye specialists. Right there on the ramp. Despite the underlined 20-pound AF allowance,  their newish SUV disgorged 8 matched suitcases of varying sizes. I pointed at one carry-on, and said, "We are taking that one. You may want to rearrange your things. This ain't no KingAir."  Agonized huff and indignant puff, followed by whining wheedle. I looked at my watch, said we'd be wheels-up in 15 minutes with or without them, suggested that there was a fine commercial airport just a short drive thataway that could take all the things. They did comply, but the agony of deciding between the workout wear and the clubbing clothes struck me as hilarious. I don't think they understood the nature of charity flights, and Mooney ones especially. )

Hi Mimi, you going to update your info to reflect the new ride? We assume your (long body) transition is complete and you're making up for the many months of Mooney Deprivation  Syndrome. How about some pics? Got a glamour shot of the grandma on the new wing?
