great lakes

Flying over the lake isn't too much different than flying in IMC with low ceilings. Lose an engine in IMC and you may be able to reach an airport but if not you are kinda out of luck.

I won't fly single engine IFR over widespread low IMC. But summer I will go high across the lake with floatation devices. I think the former is probably way more dangerous...

Summary...

1) flying high allows a lot of glide distance...

2) Having life jackets aboard extends your life in the water...

3) Carson's speed gets expensive if you are paying by the hour...

4) Some things in life are dangerous and we do it anyways... risk/reward ratio

5) hand it to the new guy to take on all unnecessary risks because he has accepted one that is necessary...

6) Coming from my friend that was a smoker... 'We all have to die from something...'

7) reviewing ditching techniques is good.

8) learning to make friends quickly is helpful.

9) warm weather is important to this discussion.

10) staying in contact through flight following or IFR is better than dialing up ATC after the engine has gone silent...

OK, that was a bit facetious... :)

Usually, pilots around here will discuss various outs and other assorted ways of adding safety to their flight...

Best regards,
