thinwing
These are ground burrowing owls..papa owl is keeping watch while one of two owlets is partway out the hole.Momma is probably down in the ground grooming other owlets. Some kind soul has built a little ramp so babies can walk up and over curb.Notice all the bird poop and two signs on sticks advising the county "no spraying ,nesting owls".These guys are here every year with out fail..and this is there typical habitat..disturbed dry areas next to plowed fields or roadways. These guys have acres of grass fields surrounding our three runways at KSAC.They don't mind cars going buy but don't like motercycles!Runway 30 goes right over head ,and aircraft taking off ,doesn't faze them.Next time your county or city wants to close your airport...resist on environmental concerns. EricJ
I haven't been there for a while, but the San Jose airport used to have a very large population of those guys. They didn't seem to mind the traffic at all.
Hank
The deer and coyotes were pretty unfazed by aircraft traffic when I was in WV, and the turkey and elk at our KY lunch run were similarly not bothered . . . . We actually had coyotes nesting along the treeline on the far side of the runway.
