M20C True Airspeed

Feeling a little blue due to the weekend weather. Thought I would share some good news in an effort to cheer myself up!

 

1/29/17 - Vicinity KTBN - Four Course GPS True Airspeed Check

 

Conditions: 7000' MSL, 10C OAT, MP 23.5", 2500 rpm, 130 kts CAS, 7031' DA, 6200' PA

 

N - 137 kts GS

E - 145 kts GS

S - 150 kts GS

W - 142 kts GS

 

Avg GS = TAS = 143.5 kts = 165 mph

 

Unless I made a mistake, that's pretty impressive for a 51 year old! Thanks for humoring me.

I need to do the GPS course for this. I usually just add 2% per thousand feet to the IAS, but have played with the back pages of the 430 and calculated TAS in the 147-149 knot range.

I'm old  school, I use a wiz wheel and not GPS.

My previous C, 6XM, (may she rest in peace) would true out at 153 or 154 knots. Don Maxwell himself validated it with a four way GPS run. He said it was the fastest C he'd ever seen.  Of course it had every speed mod LASAR ever made for the C and a factory new engine. I could regularly flight plan 150 and get it.

One flight last fall, i remembered to get everything:

Forgive the look of the left panel, the plastic piece broke and i haven't gotten around to replacing it yet.

I did some Oxygen training one August. We went to 15,000 msl, climb was anemic and the controls kind of mushy. I later calculated DA to have been 18,800 . . . . Not bad for 180 carbureted horsepower! 

A neighbor who works at the not-so-nearby Sikorsky factory wants to go to ride. He asked about my cruise speed this evening, was it about 120 mph? He looked quite surprised when I told him I cruise around 170 mph, and get about the same mileage as my little Ford Ranger truck does at 70 mph. Mooneys are wonderful machines!

Can't resist getting in the game. Did a three and four heading gps run at 8000 ft with my wife on board and got 148 and 149 knots respectively but don't usually run that hard and normal power and loads give us between 140 and 145 knots true. I always flight plan for 140 and always beat my expected times.

now all you mid and long body rocket bravo hot rod owners just keep to yourselves we know you all smoke these speeds. We're all just having fun out there.

I have been disappointed with speed of Joyce.  That said I have yet to get to do much testing.  I am enjoying vacation, but looking forward to some more flying and testing.

After I finished my cowling mod, I took mine up and did the performance runs to find that mine is now a 154 knot bird. It's very similar to gsxrpilots old C with speed mods accomplished.

I was a 148 knot airplane before and now a 154.

Mine is a true 145KTAS airplane. Sometimes down at 143, but most times the E6B comes out at 145.0, and  ON THE DOT.

I'd say mine runs pretty consistently at 147-150kt at 7-10,000 ft.  Currently it has the 201 windshield, flap gap seals, and caliper reversal as the main speed mods.  I'm looking forward to Sabremech's cowl pushing it to the next level.

I'll have to remember your settings. I generally cruise at 2400rpm and get 152 tas. It's been a good average but I've never done a three way run. I'll have to knock that out this year.

Maxwell did the caliper reversal on mine as well. It's gotta be good for a fraction of a knot :-)
