Purely for the sake of conversation, what would it take to turbo an M20C? RayJay offers the STC's for it. What are we looking at cost wise to install one? What benefits would you get from turbo'ing a C model?

I have seen it done to automotive carburetors...

The challenges I see are the fuel distribution issues that the C has already will swell a little more...

Needs:

1) new or updated carb

2) updated intake plumbing

3) new exhaust plumbing with the TC.

4) better with an intercooler

5) better with a pressure controller

6) If all it does is turbo normalize, it would be very similar to having T/O power up into the flight levels.

7) With all the compressed air, comes an equivalent amount of fuel....

8) Burning more fuel, generates more heat...

9) Tell me about the current CHTs you have during your high power flights with the current cowl/dog house?

10) changing to a fuel injected engine would be a more controlled way to improve fuel distribution.

11) changing the cowling for one that doesn't rely on a square box dog house to improve airflow through the cylinder cooling fins.

12) adding a TN to an IO360 has a lot of users that you can compare notes with.

13) the economics and the results typically don't work for most people.

14) Most people aren't like us! :)

PP thoughts only.

The STC is turbonormalized only. Not a lot of -Cs have them, but its out there.

Just FYI, there is an AD out for those Rajay TN's that require hose replacement every 5 years. And they are expensive. Take a look back a week ago or so on here and one guy goes over the cost and PITA that is required to change them. FFT.

For the sake of conversation.  It is some piping some, some oil lines, some instrumentation, some changing of the fuel flow on the carburetor. On a Holley that is just rejetting it.

Any idea of cost of parts and installation?

I'm sure it's not worth the cost, just not sure why more C models weren't turbo normalized, especially those out west.

"There are no less than 86 different versions of Lycoming’s highly successful 0-360-series four cylinder engines. Of these, 27 are carburetted models of 180hp; there are seven low compression carburetted versions of 168 hp; one fuel injected model of 177hp, 10 fuel injected versions of the 180 hp engine; 22 fuel injected models of 200 hp, including five aerobatic versions; three turbocharged models of 200 hp, and 16 helicopter configurations with ratings of 180, 190, 205, 225 and 230 hp. The list of current production aircraft powered with these engines is too long to include here."

So it would get you 20 more horsepower.  There may be a piston change involved.   Why not just hang an I0-360-A1A if you are looking for 200 HP?

Well there is the cool factor of having the turbo spin up and have that high pitched whine.

There is one guy on here with a turbo system for sale. I believe he listed it on ebay too. M20F-1968 is his handle on here.

Here it is on ebay - It says for an E or F, but ask the seller I believe he said it can be modified

His name is John, the good doctor.

A trusted MSer for sure.

unfortunately, the OP was asking about a Turbo for his O360...  John's system is for the IO360.

Thus Adding to the challenge..

There is a RayJay STC for the 180hp O-360.   The configuration of the pipes is different.  I have never tried to fit the IO-360 RayJay turbonormalizer onto the O-360 engine.  I remember that there is some re-routing of exhaust pipes under the engine.  I doubt you will find even a run-out system RayJay system for an O-360 (C model).  You could try to modify the stsem for the E or F, or as it has been suggested, trade up to a turbonormalized IO-360 which will serve you well.

I do have my RayJay turbonormalized system for sale.  Probably the only one you will find existing in the world right now for an IO-360 that is in new condition.
