My wife and I are flying our M20J from Chicago to Kissimmee (ISM) for Sun N Fun.

I was wondering if anyone else is and if there are any plans in the works to all meet up

for lunch or dinner.

Headed down to KBOW Saturday before it starts and then back home Thursday. When will you be arriving?

Looks like my plans have been changed--no Sun n Fun, no AF Airshow. I'll be driving back to FAY to get my plane. My 18-month old Left  ag died coming in last night, somewhere over SC. Kept pushing mixture forward to reduce EGT (near redline once), then turned the switch. One click to the Left, engine died; one click right to Both, ran fine; two clicks over to Right, still ran fine, left it there.

Dissection  this morning showed good leads, clean, well gapped plugs. Inside the mag, the gear had sawn through the condenser wire, and there was evidence of an awful lot of arcing from the electrode. Poor Kelly factory work, they're just an hour's drive from home . . .

Ya'll have fun, I'll be trying to Keep Calm. Know where I can rent some help??     :P

Sorry to hear about the bad mag.

How many hours/years on it, Hank?

Any warning signs?

Not too many hours, I'll check when I get home. It was run through the Kelly factory in Aug '15, just after I changed jobs and was busy buying a house and becoming a landlord.

Got night current Wed., maybe 20 RPM drop on left and < 100 on the right, everything leaned out like normal once around the pattern and over to ALX for fuel and back. Last night, runup was ~50 RPM each, normal takeoff and climb. Then noticed EGT getting really high, never seen it above 1525°F before, but it hit 1600 twice last night . . .

but an engine monitor is suddenly on my priority list, even though I have nowhere to put it.

Nice Pirep, Hank.

I pushed the like button, because I liked your explanation and technical details.

Good luck with the next steps.

Best regards,

-a-

From here on out, it's sit and wait. Mag is being sent out for a proper rebuild, reinstalled and tested, then I will drive my mother in law home in her car and fly the plane back to Alabama. Pretty simple for me . . .

I wonder if they will decide to cut the grass this year before the show starts....my prop was GREEN !!!!!

I don't see how you can plan a show like that and not cut the grass a couple of days prior.....

Every grass strip I've flown into has always given me green prop. Including the heavy-traffic'ed Cannon Creek, with grass barely longer than the width of my finger.

I replaced the factory EGT with a Aerospace EGT in both of my Mooneys.  Fits in you EGT hole to provide 4-channel EGT function.  While not a full-fledged monitor, having full EGT coverage gives you a lot of troubleshooting capability at a fraction of the cost.

It was so long where we parked that it was even a pain in the ass to walk around......probably about a months worth of growth....driving in next time

@Antares I was the one that stopped by for a minute and asked about the cowling. We sure need some MooneySpace decals for our planes. I was a few rows back with another C owner.

Here is us packing up Thursday night:

Friday morning departure:

17800376_10155223561554640_6534152511334

Formation flying with Cody's beautiful '67 M20C. He took off first and my 3-blade absolutely decimated his 2-blade in climb. We didn't exactly measure but I guess I had another 150-200fpm climb on him. It took a few minutes after level-off for him to catch me. At the same power settings, he had 3KTAS on me in cruise, I suspect that J cowl and spinner had something to do with that.

We stopped in Leesburg to pick up a friend in his Cherokee 140. We had to do 18" MP and 2500rpm to not pass him. We were averaging about 115 indicated, below Vge!

I think the batcopter guy is based out of Peter O Knight. He has one of the original batmobiles too. Supposedly they made four. Rumor has it one of them had the real-deal Turbonique rocket axles in it. The one that I saw just made flames.
