The Tale of high wind and two flights

Recommended Posts

I ended up with a pretty decent tail wind going down to Ohio to help anther Lancair IVPT builder with his wiring on Thursday.  Paid for that tailwind yesterday.  I didn't snap a photo on the way down, was pretty busy with the extra speed.  Shot one on the way back though and had 110-116 knots on the nose.  Could have gone lower but the fuel burn was horrid already at FL200, a good 12 gallons an hour more than on the way down.  Still pretty neat to hit almost 200 knots G.S. with that kind of head wind.

Great photo! Wish you'd blurred out parts of it, though--I zoomed in, saw your Fuel Flow and almost got sick . . .  Guess it's all part of that blazing speed!

Yep, his 4.6 nmpg shocked me too until I ran the numbers and realized that my J only gets 5.6 nmpg against a 100 knot headwind. For only 1 more nmpg he's making 4X the groundspeed (and is actually getting somewhere).

Ground speed is where it's at!

190kts is the slow speed...

390kts is the holy cow, speed...  :)

My favorite trip is 200nm, at 400kts over the ground, I would be done in a half hour.   Pretty nice compared to drive times...

Thanks for sharing the numbers, Tom.

Best regards,

What's 1200Kts GS by your calculation?

you wouldn't like the fuel burn- I promise..... 78,000 Lbs /hr.

Five stages of AB in the F-15C at 40,000' :-)

Job, you had me looking for a typo... :)

12,000 kts is similar to God Speed, Mr. Glenn.

At that rate, my flight would only take ten minutes in cruise.  13,000 Lbs of fuel.   2,200 gallons.  8.8 Amus...

approximately 20amu for the weekend.

The F15C would have room for my wife, right?

Thanks for the details. It would be great to go along on an F15 flight!

Best regards,

-a-

His gas is also cheaper, other costs; well who wants to count those.
