WE NEED ANOTHER EXECUTIVE ORDER

Plane in avionics shop for misc. upgrades including EDM930, GTX345 transponder as well as Garmin's new stereo panel. So far so good.

Decided to install the new G5 attitude indicator, as a back up, now available for certified aircraft.  Called shop and placed request.

Shop supervisor told me the new G5 was not certified for backup, they could only install the G5 as a primary unit. Huh?

A bit confused, I thanked him and hung up. Called Garmin tech support and rep said, " I am sure that is not correct, but let me check with my supervisor."

Long story short, The G5 cannot be installed as a back up unit.

It seems the certification process is so costly, Garmin decided the juice wasn't worth the squeezing and will not pursue  FAA certification as a backup unit.

Now, where is that executive order when you need it?

Poor Garmin guy, we have been discussing that situation for months around here.

It seems, Everyone looking to add the G5 in a back-up role is unable because of paperwork.

Where is the G5 product manager?

I don't see where the issue is either.  Install the G5 and label it "primay" and the original as "back up or standby"

It makes no sense but that is the way it's written...can't be a backup to a g500 per stc

I just put a G500 in my J.  Used the L-3 ESI-500 for the backup.  Solid little unit.

The problem is some of these systems require a backup.

If you are installing the G5 for added safety and backup to your primary AI is not required  how about installing under NORSEE?

Can autopilots that get their info from the vacuum attitude indicator get their info from the G5? That might make what you call your primary instrument somewhat more relevant.

The G5 for certified planes doesn't do all the things it can when experimental...

You find this info when reading all the threads here on MS...
