mikeyhaley Posted January 31, 2017 Report Posted January 31, 2017 Does anyone know why my transponder switches to ground automatically? I've been working on my IFR rating and when we go missed on an approach, it automatically switches to ground instead of staying on Altitude. I've searched and searched and can't find a setting and/or a fix to make it stay on Altitude. I've asked the shop that installed it several times and get no response. Quote
Cruiser Posted January 31, 2017 Report Posted January 31, 2017 Not sure this will help but you can start here.................. Automatic ALT/GND Mode Switching If the GTX 330 is configured for Automated Airborne Determination, normal operation begins when take off is sensed. When the aircraft is on the ground the screen automatically displays GND. The transponder does not respond to ATCRBS interrogations when GND is annunciated. When a delay time is set (dependent upon installation configuration), the GTX 330 waits a specified length of time after landing before changing to GND mode. Quote
carusoam Posted January 31, 2017 Report Posted January 31, 2017 (edited) Mikey did you get any of the manuals that came with your radios? All the radios since the early 90's have so much technical detail available that it is hard to find them all while flying the plane. They have been digital radios hiding behind funny name plates, the digital world makes them more technically capable than old analog radios. The newest digital radios are impossible to guess regarding operations. They have so many set-up variables they depend highly on who set them up to begin with. The radio builders, BK, Garmin and Avidyne have done a pretty good job of putting the user manuals on line. Try to download them to your iPad... Going by my GTX 33 remote which behaves normally, it sounds like you may have an incorrect configuration of the delay time. When the delay time is set properly it waits a specified length of time after landing before changing to GND mode. Sounds like yours is set too short. The shop who installed it should know about it. If they don't and assuming it's a Garmin certified installer, you can always call Garmin. The first thing they will tell you is go to a Garmin certified shop. If you tell them they are not responding to your issue Garmin will call the shop and get on them to do it. This is why Garmin certifies installers. 1 Quote
AaronDC8402 Posted January 31, 2017 Report Posted January 31, 2017 The FAA recommends that you keep your transponder in ALT mode any time you're powered on. Instead of adjusting the GND mode timer, I'd suggest changing it so that it starts up in ALT mode by default and stays there any time it's powered on. If I remember it right, the procedure is to press and hold the FUNC button while powering on your avionics switch. When it starts up, you're in configuration mode. There's A LOT of stuff that can be configured. Don't accidentally change any of the important stuff. Garmin recommends an avionics shop make the changes if you have a certified plane. If it's experimental, the pilot can do it. 2 Quote
Glenn Posted February 2, 2017 Report Posted February 2, 2017 You can find the installation manual online. It will list all of the adjustable parameters. http://www.mstewart.net/Downloads/GTX330_IM.pdf 1 Quote
