Avidyne 10.2 Release Appears Imminent

If you have a IFD 540 and AXP322 verify if you are passing the ADS-B AIR ON GROUND portion on your ADS-B report.

There may be a glitch with hows long the IFD 540 and AXP 322 takes to report that the aircraft is on the ground (when you crank up) and/or when you land.

There is a potential fix, but it is not software related. The fix is hardware interaction related and for us MOONEY drivers, it will require removing your panel, harness , and equipment out again and if your AXP322 is mounted in the tell, even more work.  In other words, it can easily turn into a 20 hour project depending on your Mooney setup.

The same madness goes for Cirrus drivers as well.

I've had an IFD540 for the past two years and already love it. Updating that to 10.2 today - waiting for IFD500 replacement.

ahh gotcha. The updates are out on the street already? Damn I'll have to call.

You will not see complaints from ATC.  This is why I said perform the test and review the ADS-B report.

Eventually one day an ATC will make a stink about AIR ON GROUND data depending on events / timing, etc.  You may get really  when it is time for the work to be performed.

Normally, the data is not transmitted for 90 seconds, this is why most ATC probably think you just did not change / program the transponder yet with the code --- NOTE this 90 seconds is typical during start-up.

Upon landing, the about the same time frame takes place before the GPS and Transponder says that the aircraft is on ground.

So most ATC will not notice if they are busy or do not care.  ATCs at bigger airports may become fussy, especially when they start to focus on using ADS-B for separation (as the system ramps up for prime time)

Realize, you are only allowed about 8 - 10 MCFs, anything over that the FAA consider it a FAIL -- -F --- NO GOOD ...

And in some causes due to the AUTOMATIC MONITORING --- you will receive a letter in the mail saying to get your stuff fix within 30 days or do not fly.

I already know one person that received one of those letters (he was not using Avidyne's equipment.) Needless to say, the code is being improve and revamp to make things autonomous in the concepts of AVIATION TRAFFIC COP.

Nice thing about 10.2 update, it will give us capstone / symbology functionality.

Also, the 10.2 update will fix another glitch that they never told you about ... The traffic sensor fault when you have the MLB100, AXP322, and the IFD 540.

Now this allows the data ports to be used how they should be --- closing the gap towards Garmin ADS-B functionality

Before Avidyne's 10.2 update, TIS-B data was asymmetrical, but longer of the data ports.

Here is another way you can exactly how long and when the unit is not working for the duration in regards of the IFD 540 / AXP322 AIR on GROUND reporting.

Do you have a JPI 730 / 830 or better with it tied into your GPS.  If so, look at your logs.

Regardless, if your GPS, Transponder, and/or JPI turns on at the same time or not, you will see  erroneous reporting while you are on the ground.

The JPI will show you traveling at airspeeds while above 0 when you are not evening moving.  The speeds may be up to 150 knots ..

Anyway, this is one of those hidden glitches that they will not tell you, but the FAA will sure make somebody fix it.  The purpose of sharing this data is so that you can get it fix correctly.

The fix requires a wire from the GPS to the transponder  --- this while acts as a software squat switch  --- ESPECIALLY, if you're aircraft does not have a squat switch.

Many of us Mooney drivers have a diaphragm that operates based on airspeed in regards of gear retraction, which is not the same as a squat switch that operates based on weight on the wheels.

If you are wondering who else knows this --- let's me put it this way ----  hmmm let's say people who are operating an entire fleet of IFD 540 / AXP322 and we are all very

The issue is being worked on --- either software update (most likely not going to work) The AXP322 is a TRIG UNIT and they didn't plan ahead for a firmware update since the chip is limited in design and function.

Hardware fix -- replace chip along with some GPS AT modifications but $$$$  ...

Cheap hardware fix -- the wire between the IFD 540 and AXP322  but still adds up time you undo your panel

If you are wondering who is going to pay --- if you catch it in time and deal with it, especially during and/or right after installation --- most likely Avidyne

If you let it go then it will be eventually you

If and/or when the FAA get involve and make it a potential SB / AD then it may be you and Avidyne paying and worst case depending on events, it may be solely the aircraft owner.

Again the IFD 540 is a really good unit but without great technology leaps, pulling your hair out or in some causes your panel out if not both is part of the process.

Is 2 hours per update normal? Seems like a lot of labor to plug it in and ignore it.

It's definitely not plug and ignore. You have to write down or take pictures of all of the configurations both in maintenance mode (12 screens) and regular mode and several times throughout the update it will prompt you for responses and then at the end you have to do the conformity check and cross check the number of every data packet. Two hours is fair.

Mine was done last night and we were in the hangar well over two hours

Why isn't it covered under warranty?

Your IFD 540 does what it's supposed to do These are add ons. You don't have to upgrade - the present software is certified. Think of a car dealer giving you a very desirable option a year after you buy the vehicle, but all you have to pay for is the installation.

Warranties are for defects in material and workmanship. If you decide to add a trailer hitch to your car it's not covered under warranty.

GM doesn't charge me to flash new software to my car. This is no different. Statement still stands.
