Schinderhannes Posted November 20, 2016 Report Posted November 20, 2016 Does anybody know if you have to remove the oil filter to remove and install the vacuum pump on a 1970 M20C when using the special rapco wrench? Quote
RLCarter Posted November 20, 2016 Report Posted November 20, 2016 it might make it easier but it is not necessary 1 Quote
Mooneymite Posted November 20, 2016 Report Posted November 20, 2016 I think that using the special wrench is cheating. REAL men contort themselves while using a hammer and long screwdriver uttering strong language incantations. 2 Quote
cliffy Posted November 22, 2016 Report Posted November 22, 2016 I deplore the foul language when the correct wrench is NOT used! :-) Also a bent (90 degree) piece of wire to start the bottom nuts is a help also. Quote
Piloto Posted November 22, 2016 Report Posted November 22, 2016 A magnet pickup tool helps on holding the nut when putting it back. José 1 Quote

DrBill Posted November 22, 2016 Report Posted November 22, 2016 my a&P and I did my pump with wrench in about 2 hours. Did not remove anything else except top cowl. Bill Quote

Guest Posted November 22, 2016 Report Posted November 22, 2016 Install the easy 3 washers, lock washers and nuts first leaving them loose. A pair of long tweezers to install the washers, stick the nut to my Snap On magnetic screwdriver slip it to the end of the stud, push the vacuum pump against the stud trapping the nut. Run the nut on with a long thin common screwdriver, tighten the nut with the bent wrenches I made before I bought the special wrench. Then tighten the others with normal tools. Not overly difficult to do and no parts removed from the engine. Clarence Quote

I use the exact same technique as Clarence, except I use the magnetic tip of the SnapOn screwdriver to install the washers and lock washers as well. Quote

Schinderhannes Posted November 25, 2016 Author Report Posted November 25, 2016 (edited) Thank you for all the advice. Using the "modified" (magnetic tool) Clarence's technique did the job in less than 2 hours. My A&P didn't have the Rapco wrench and subscribes to Mooneymite's approach in combination with removing oil filter and using crowfoot. In the meantime I have to disagree with Mooneymite on this one. Only Girly-Man contort themselves - REAL men know a woman who knows where to get the correct tool. Edited November 25, 2016 by N9495V Added Pictures 5 Quote
