Vacuum pump removal & install

Recommended Posts

Install the easy 3 washers, lock washers and nuts first leaving them loose.  A pair of long tweezers to install the washers, stick the nut to my Snap On magnetic screwdriver slip it to the end of the stud, push the vacuum pump against the stud trapping the nut.  Run the nut on with a long thin common screwdriver, tighten the nut with the bent wrenches I made before I bought the special wrench. Then tighten the others with normal tools.

Not overly difficult to do and no parts removed from the engine.

Just installed a new vacuum pump yesterday.  I use the exact same technique as Clarence, except I use the magnetic tip of the SnapOn screwdriver to install the washers and lock washers as well.

Great minds think alike!

Thank you for all the advice. Using the "modified" (magnetic tool) Clarence's technique did the job in less than 2 hours. My A&P didn't have the Rapco wrench and subscribes to Mooneymite's approach in combination with removing oil filter and using crowfoot.

In the meantime I have to disagree with Mooneymite on this one. Only Girly-Man contort themselves - REAL men know a woman who knows where to get the correct tool. :D
