  1. 1. Seems like a lot of us on the forum have served in the Armed forces so I thought it would be interested to see what branch has the most representation. GO NAVY!

This is only my second post, but looked like a good spot to start....

Grandfather was USCG from the '20s through the '40s.  Aircrew on Douglas RDs.

Father was Army Air Corps, then USAF, 1941 through 1972.  WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.  P-38s, F-86s, F-100s, F102s mainly.

I'm USAF then ANG, from 1976, retired 2001.  One tour as a FAIP in the T-37, the rest in the F-15.

Son is a 2LT in the ARMY, Ft Rucker bound, eventually headed to an ARNG Blackhawk unit.

He's the reason for the new Mooney.  We need something in which he could fly to build some time, and I wanted something fast.

I have photos of all of us "at work."  When I get a chance, I'll try and post some.

I'll dig around more, but I did find these two.  Dad, me, and son, all as cadets.  All of us about 20 years old.  And one of Granddad escorting the Hindenberg to Lakehurst, NJ

What a great history, Dave!

My family wasn't blessed with eyesight that good, my own being the reason I failed the Navy Flight Physical at age 17 . . . So I never had the chance to shoot for a Tomcat of my own, several years before Top Gun started filming. Dad flew large whirlybirds for the Marines in the late 50s and early 69s before moving into communications until he retired on 10 Nov 78.

All I've ever flown is a couple of Cessna trainers and my Mooney.

Flying is flying, and it's all glorious!  Some days I start to take it for granted, and then I watch the sun rise from the cockpit, and I'm back in awe again...

Our best friends in a blue uniform.  Only folks whose only mission was to go downtown.  Taking them on 10 or 20 at a time instead of doing BFMs at 20,000', one bad guy at a time.  :)

You said it, Ned.  As a (former) infantryman, the best looking airplane in the world is an A10 starting a strafing run.

Here I was thinking that if you *NEED* CAS as an infantry-man, the best looking aircraft in the world is the one providing it! B)

F/A-18E/F, and a FAC(A) for several years in my Navy days... now F-15's ANG.

Agreed!  But the A-10 guys, more than any other Air Force pilots, always struck me as "one of us".

Welcome aboard, Tom.

You have found the thread where Mooney pilots have openly discussed their service planes...

If you fill in your branch of the military (in the poll) at the top of this thread, the results will be posted visibly to you...

there are probably twice the number of pilots that don't post much of their personal history.

There is also a large portion of people that read and don't post anything.

Find the Army/Navy game thread.  A good rivalry has a way of drawing people in off the sidelines.

Keep in mind this site is all about Mooney related topics.  Getting too far off center can get curtailed.

Thankyou for your service!

Best regards,

-a-
