DXB Posted August 11, 2016 Report Posted August 11, 2016 So...um...can anyone confirm what this thing is? I pulled it out of my plane - it was fastened to a frame tube under my panel on the pilot side. I assume it's the fuel selector light, and I also suspect that it hasn't worked since the Nixon administration. It appears to be a sealed unit, and I see no way to open it to change a bulb. Nor can I see any kind of bulb through the frosted lens- very odd design. Has anyone had a hangar elf attach a modern LED of some kind to those leads?
Hank Posted August 11, 2016 Report Posted August 11, 2016 Interesting . . . I've never noticed a light there, I'll have to look. Noida why someone would out a white night light inside the cockpit.
jamesm Posted August 11, 2016 Report Posted August 11, 2016 (edited) I believe you are correct that is what mine looks like on my '67C surprisingly enough my light worked. The location and they way it was mounted makes it pretty much useless. It must had been an after thought or requirement. On mine I the lens assembly had came loose fell off. It works pretty much like the grimes landing gear indicator and low vacuum warning lights assemblies. Edited August 11, 2016 by jamesm
Guitarmaster Posted August 11, 2016 Report Posted August 11, 2016 That is pretty cool and I was was going to put a light under there so I could see what was going on. As far as dimming goes, without a pwm you're going to be pretty limited. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk

These are tricky to replace the bulbs in, but basically you just keep twisting the knurled part and you will discover one of those teeny light bulbs inside. They last pretty much forever and your bulb may be OK and you just haven't seen it because the shroud was closed (useful when doing covert ops in your Mooney). 1
carusoam Posted August 11, 2016 Report Posted August 11, 2016 It looks very similar to a light with an adjustable iris. A white version of the gear up and gear down lights. If the plane was last flown at night during the Nixon administration, you are spot on! Available at aircraft spruce... practice with the gear lights first, the way Harley indicates above... The Iris will open before the lens unscrews. Best regards, -a-
Conrad Posted August 12, 2016 Report Posted August 12, 2016 Mine works! It's not bright enough to do anything, but, I mean, it works,
RLCarter Posted August 12, 2016 Report Posted August 12, 2016 Just now, Conrad said: Mine works! It's not bright enough to do anything, but, I mean, it works, Makes you wonder why it has an adjustable iris, not like it's going to fade the carpet with all that light it puts out. I would bet that the bulb has been replaced from one from the auto parts store
carusoam Posted August 12, 2016 Report Posted August 12, 2016 In some cases it is too bright and may make it difficult to see outside at night... More so for very light colored interiors. Less so for my old Cs dirty brown colored carpet. No issues during day VFR... Best regards, -a-
Pictreed Posted August 12, 2016 Report Posted August 12, 2016 My 65E has it but one of the wires unscrewed. Haven't hooked it back up. I can feel the fuel selector to tell the position and I have flashlights if I need them so I don't really need it. Tim
