Updating Garmin data card for 430W on Mac (or old windows machine)

I am able to update the Jepp NavData card with the Jepp writer and the JDMApp on my Mac, but was never able to get the FlyGarmin website to see the Garmin USB Aviation Data Card programmer even though the Garmin Plugin communicator install seems to run.

Rather than fight city hall, I had been using an old Windows laptop running Vista to update the Garmin Card. However, something changed. Either Garmin changed the page or there were changes to how Firefox and other browsers handle the plugin, but now even the Windows Laptop won't update the Garmin card .:(

The FlyGarmin App claims to be able to run under Vista, but when I download that and click on the file, it won't launch.

Has anybody been able to update the Garmin Data card for a 430W using a Mac?

I also have a GTN750 and I was able to update the Garmin SD card for that device using a standard SD card writer. It just doesn't seem to recognize the older Garmin USB Aviation Data Card Writer...This guy:

As I had no other choice, I use the Jepp JDM progam with a PC for several years.  I download and program with the same JDM package.  I have no Garmin software or hardware, and did not realize that there was a Garmin option, only Jepp for the 430W.  There was a complete JDM software replacement from Jepp in the last month or so, so check that you are up to date on your Jepp software.

I use Win 7 and the Jepp USB dongle/tool with a few different PC's.

My GNS430W has two physical data cards, which load one on each side of the  C V knobs. You can kind of see here

cf-lg.jpgThe one on the outside is for the Jepp "Nav Data" (updating this works with JDMApp on the Mac) for the Instrument Procedures. The other card holds data from Garmin for Terrain and Obstacles. It is labelled "Garmin TAWS/Terrain Data".

Do you have two cards and update both with Jepp?

I have the two slots, but I have only updated the NAV data (monthly), and I am working with the older terrain data.  It was not clear to me that you were working with the terrain data card, so my intentions are more helpful than the reality. :-)

I only update the Nav Data through Jeppesen using their JDM software which painless. Terrain data, or scorched earth heights, just doesn't change much. Obstacles of course do, but frankly I am never that low except on takeoff and landing and don't really care. Your need very well be different.

I've never owned a 430/530 but for the GTN boxes the Garmin package pricing makes it easy to keep Obstacles, SafeTaxi, and Terrain, etc. current. The new OnePak provides all of the following databases and their periodic updates, for all qualifying avionics in a single aircraft for an entire year.

United States Standard + FliteCharts is $799 and provides all the below for the GTN. And everything can be loaded on a portable (I have a 696) and Garmin Pilot (I have a Android tablet).

  • Garmin Navigation
  • Obstacles
  • Terrain
  • SafeTaxi
  • FliteCharts
  • Airport Directory
  • IFR/VFR Charts
  • Basemap
  • Frequency
