Now that transition training is over the mission for my Mooney will be taking me to meet with Inspectors, handling licensing, and so on around the region.

So I will fly in and rent a car but that leaves my plane out in the open.  I have a cover for the cabin but what do you guys use for the cowl openings?

I have a '65 E with the lower cowl enclosure.

I'm also curious if you guys carry your own tie downs?

Thanks, Tim

I don't have any cowl plugs but I definitely carry my own tie downs. Many airports don't have them if you land after hours or they are just crappy ropes that are hard to work with.

My plane got it's additional covers/plugs from Jim Cancil at planecovers.com...  My O's picture is still on the website...  My C got it's cover there.  My C was strictly an outdoor bird...

Best regards,

+1 for Jim. He can make you custom plugs for whatever opening you have. Looks like it's $65 for a pair.

Don't forget something for the tail opening as well...

Does anyone make something for our tail feathers? If not, I suspect Jim Cancil would be interested. There's also a big hole in vintage retractable step. Cowl flaps...

I find cowl plugs a necessity.  I left them out a while back, only to come back and find a bird had attempted to take up residence inside of the baffling, I couldn't reach it from outside and had to take off the outer and open up the inner cowl to clean it out...  Next time I'll remember my cowl plugs.

I just use foam rubber, using a bread knife I was able to fit them exactly to the plane, and put a rope from one plug to the other, so that if I forget to remove them, they exit instead of ingest.  Total cost $5.  A red spray paint reminds me that they need to come out.  I have some nice fire orange fabric to cover them, but that's getting to be 4 years old...I don't think it is going to happen.

Yeah, I've been meaning to order a nice looking set complete with tail number for several years. In the meantime I have those foam blocks covered with some nylon socks I used to get all the time on Delta overseas flights. They're maroon matching my plane color. They're connected with a matching nylon lanyard with a Red Remove Before Flight streamer. Total cost zero. Looks to be worth about what I have invested.

These look great Bob! Thanks for posting the link.  Definitely going to order a set of plugs from these people.  They look like they're really nice quality.

During this time of year, if I plan on leaving my plane on the ramp for more than a few hours, I plug up all of the openings using foam that I carry around. If it is looking like rain, I stuff the foam in various size Glad bags. It doesn't take long for the critters to attack.

I know, I would love to see David's cowl available for the F models.

David -- can you post some more pictures of your cowl. We need to drool some more.
