Sun Visors

My 66E is also a center mount.  And I am interested in helping get this refined.  Don, whatever you need I will try and help, but I am a civil engineer and not a mechanical.  I can build a wetland, stream, put in site utilities, but I don't know the difference between a drill and a drill press.  (well I do know that, but you get the point.)

I think the design of the mount and arm is OK, but still glad to have comments or criticism. The part I am less sure of is the size and shape of the shade itself. I have seen pictures of Rosens, and they seem too large. The ones on my LASARs is awfully good. A couple of considerations are how they may interfere with things like the compass, and how well they get out of the way when swung up. For instance interference with the air vents. I don't know of a way to figure these out without fitting in a C or E and seeing. Letting owners hold up cardboard or the like of various sizes might give some clue. That is why I posted the distance from the center post to the outer edge. Incidentally, that distance is hard to reduce much at all, as the "overlap" of the two parts of the extension arm needs to be large enough to furnish support. and in order to reach the side window, the extended arm has a minimum length.

Don - my apologies for taking so long to post these pictures. Here is what I have installed in my plane. Not sure if they are factory or aftermarket. My interest in replacing the plexi is that they seem to have gotten hazy over the years.

Any ideas?

Can you use the panel from these to replace yours?

Good question. I will measure what I have and see.

I think those are factory..or at least the mounts are. Mine are identical. Right down to the tabs being "greenish"..what was up with that?

Hmmm, plane built in 1975. Avocado is the rage in kitchen appliance color for the 1970s. I think Yetti's 1975 interior is actually done up in avocado. I have the more stately, crushed deep orange topped off with the manure brown seat trim.

Was the manure brown seat trim from the factory, or an after market add on? :)

When you guys quote topics, can you please not include the pictures. Us poor folk out here have the slow internet

Not really something we can change in the forum software.  However note that your computer will only download the image once and then cache it on your system.  So future times that you see the photo it should not require another download (unless you have your browser setup to not cache things).

I finally got my 3rd iteration visor built. I think it is an improvement over my earlier ones, as there is more "friction area" than the ball joints, so they move easier without being too loose.

As always, glad to share ideas on design, materials, etc., and glad to have comments and suggestions.

I still don't have a mill. I sourced them out to a Chinese outfit. I found several places that would do them, but most of them required 3D data, and all I had was my own drawings. One place finally agreed to convert my drawings to 3D and manufacture some for me.

Don,

I would be happy to make any 3D models you need.  I also have a 3D printer and can print Prototype parts if you need something to "Lay your Hands on" before machining parts.

For clamping force consider some of these under the nut to provide the clamping force.  They can be stacked if needed to get the desired load. They will maintain a constant load over time much better than just a bolt/nut.

I've used my lathe for simple milling by mounting a small 2 axis vise vertically on the cross slide, If you need 2D to 3D I can draw from what you have.

I sent you a PM. Thanks for the offer on the 2D-3D conversion. I may take you up on it sometime.

Thanks for the offer.

I never considered those washers. I think I will get some of them and give them a try.

My 65' E has no provisions for sun visors on the sides, just FYI

IIRC, I believe '65 is the last year without a support for side mount visors.
