Video GPS overlay

I have been experimenting with my GoPro 3+ here and there. I have gotten some decent footage, but my editing skills are lacking.  Additionally, I would really like opinions on the easiest way to overlay synchronized GPS data (Speed, Altitude, heading, etc). I have searched and come up with nothing. Perhaps I'm using the wrong search terms?  Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Some of the editing software will allow you to add a second source for an overlay. I like how the Garmin VIRB does this -- builds it into the video.

I would reach out to one of the YouTubers like Mr. Aviation 101 and ask how he does it. The stuff I post looks like it was from the silent film era, just with sound.

I looked into VIRB, but it's my understanding that it only works in concert with Garmin devices.

As gsx pointed it is a standalone but Garmin has done a nice job of integrating it into their other devices and apps. You can control it through Garmin Pilot and the Garmin watch among other things.
