Seth Posted November 12, 2015 Report Posted November 12, 2015 Lightspeed has done it again - advancing the headset market. They have just released the Tango - a wireless ANR headset: http://www.lightspeedaviation.com/Tango/subgrouping.htm?cat=35717&utm_source=iContact&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Lightspeed%20Aviation%20-%20Communication&utm_content=Tango+launch+-+Nov2015 And it looks like it costs $800.00 - less than the PFX ($1175 and Zulu 2 $900) -Seth Quote
KSMooniac Posted November 12, 2015 Report Posted November 12, 2015 I applaud innovation, but this sure seems like a solution looking for a problem IMO. Do headset wires *really* get in the way of operating a plane? It's not like you can get very far away from the panel when you're using a headset, right? And for us owner-pilots, I wouldn't enjoy having to take the headset home to charge after every flight either. 2 Quote
Seth Posted November 12, 2015 Author Report Posted November 12, 2015 Scott- I'd agree, but what about slightly larger aircraft or those in a club configuration in the back seat? I had the same thoughts from the pilot perspective - we are staying in our seats. But for others in an aircraft with space to move around? This could be very well received. -Seth Quote
carusoam Posted November 13, 2015 Report Posted November 13, 2015 The thread I just read was Bose owners with broken headsets because the wires got yanked... My headsets are so comfortable people forget they are still wearing them while they try to exit... Wireless could be helpful, but not for the obvious reasons... Best regards, -a- Quote
Houman Posted November 13, 2015 Report Posted November 13, 2015 I would actually would like to get one, but from my reading and first impression, it dos'nt seem that they are as good as the PFX. I like the PFX very much, they are a great, sometimes the auto-ajustement is anoying, but all in all much better than the Zulu 2, and I would say better than Bose... Quote
eman1200 Posted November 13, 2015 Report Posted November 13, 2015 I ordered a set. I needed to stop borrowing a spare set from DrBill and was just about ready to pull the trigger on the Z2s when these came out, and they are the same price. If for now we just assume the sound quality is the same, I'll take wireless over wired. Plus, I have 30 days to try em out, send em back if I don't like em. Quote
Hank Posted November 13, 2015 Report Posted November 13, 2015 I'm curious where the 31" panel piece goes. Apparently both it and the headset need to be charged. Quote
eman1200 Posted November 13, 2015 Report Posted November 13, 2015 31 inch? Maybe three point one inch.....you plug THAT into the jacks in the panel. Quote

Hank, you scared me, I had to try to figure out where you came up with the 31" thing. Only thing I could find was this blurb: "Wrapped in an attractive and durable case, it houses the lower cable, which is adjustable to 31 inches..." so that's just how far the cable (F) extends out of the panel interface unit. Hank Posted November 13, 2015 Report Posted November 13, 2015 Guess that's it. I just scanned the discussion over on POA. I'm not in the market for headsets, although there have been several times I've wished my weightless Halos were wireless. At least their wires are sturdy, they pull the headset right off when I try to get out of the plane, and they keep on working. Even after six years, I still sometimes forget I'm wearing them. 2 Quote
aviatoreb Posted November 13, 2015 Report Posted November 13, 2015 I used to want a wireless headset. I figured wires are just annoying. But I have come to think that they are only annoying when climbing into the cockpit. I have also come to the realization that yet more chargers and batteries to keep charged and babysit the charge status are even more annoying. Until they come out with ten thousand hour batteries - I will just stick with wires - the lesser of two evils. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/mediatechnologyandtelecoms/11818151/Revealed-the-first-hydrogen-powered-battery-that-will-charge-your-Apple-iPhone-for-a-week.html 1 Quote

carusoam Posted November 14, 2015 Report Posted November 14, 2015 English / metric conversion....1/8”=3.1 mm...? Ordinary headphone jack size for the Walkman. Best regards, -a- Quote
Hank Posted November 14, 2015 Report Posted November 14, 2015 1/8" = 3.2 mm in round numbers. It's the size of current headphone jacks. Walkman used smaller plugs. 1 Quote
carusoam Posted November 14, 2015 Report Posted November 14, 2015 I thought I missed something. Just couldn't remember which detail it was. I had this challenge for something home stereo related some documents said 3.1, others used 3.2, they all agreed on the 1/8" dimension part. Thanks again, -a- Quote

I have a wired set on the co-pilot side and it is always a juggling act to move the wires as the passenger gets in. Anyone know if these are TSOd? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
eman1200 Posted November 17, 2015 Report Posted November 17, 2015 if you have time or are bored or curious and if you can deal with my rambling, here are two initial review videos on the Lightspeed Tango. General overview: https://youtu.be/OcogMxpVoBU Bluetooth: https://youtu.be/Jn9wvn88v6E 1 Quote

The quality items you note also help explain why the price is lower than their Zulu 2 and PFX models. Nice job! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
1964-M20E Posted November 17, 2015 Report Posted November 17, 2015 I wonder what the range is on the wireless? In helicopters operations when doing hot fueling (fueling while the engine is running) it would be handy when one gets out to supervise the fueling process he can still talk to the pilot in the helicopter. 1 Quote

I bet the squelch would be overwhelmed by helicopter rotor prop wash. Quote
carusoam Posted November 17, 2015 Report Posted November 17, 2015 I enjoyed the general overview video. It was as much about the product as it was the raw expectations of the user. The presentation is light and smooth with a huge sense of humor. The precision of all those plastic parts integrated with other materials is very impressive. If it all works as expected, that's a bonus. Modern chemistry has produced polymers that are reliably moldable and very durable. We won't know how good or bad these things are until they get used, a lot. It looks like a whole bunch of cell phone precision has been incorporated into the design. I grew up in the age that had modern rotary telephones. Mine was blue. Wires were the expectation. Cordless at 10k' wasn't in the grasp of anyone, not even NASA. Eman, Great way to share some ideas. You have some skills! Best regards, -a- Quote
carusoam Posted November 17, 2015 Report Posted November 17, 2015 The best way to view Eman's BT video... Plug your earbuds into your iPad and watch. Get immersed. You may even giggle when he puts the Lightspeed on his head and dials the local weather service. Fire up the Spotify, in a noisy room, cordless Zulus are for you! Eman, is that the Google glass you are using? I briefly saw your reflection in the glass table but couldn't tell. Best regards, -a- Quote
aviatoreb Posted November 17, 2015 Report Posted November 17, 2015 I have a set of these that I use on commercial flights http://www.amazon.com/Bose-QuietComfort-Acoustic-Cancelling-Headphones/dp/B00X9KV0HU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1447786394&sr=8-1&keywords=bose+in+ear+noise+cancelling I wish they had an aviation version - and better yet, a wireless aviation version.
