I've got a 1981 M20K (231),  On my last flight it seems as if the left hand strobe is not as strong as the right hand strobe.  Has anyone else experienced this?  What are potential causes?  Bad bulb?  Bad power supply?

Chris, It could be the power supply (probably a capacitor) or the bulb.  A new bulb is cheap enough.  Depending on the strobe system you have, you can also test the power supply by swapping sides (this assumes you have a power supply in each wing).  If you find out it is the power supply, send me a PM.

I bought one from Chief several weeks ago for $32.

What bulb did you get.  I have an A627, which is a bit more (like $80).

My left strobe went out. I just changed my 81 J to LED, so I have a power supply cheap!

I'm curious what sort of LED solution you went with.  I took a closer look at my strobes and they are to older style.  I believe SDi made them and it doesn't seem like bulbs are readily available. It's quite the contraption where the bulb, reflector, and fixture are all combined.  --In any case, I still have more work to isolate the issue to power supply or bulb.

Same thing happened on my 231 when i picked it up. Maxwell installed a refurbished power supply (due to pre buy inspect finding) but it never worked right. Installed a brand new wheels supply and haven't had an issue since.

Well I can sell you my working strobes with power pack for $200, or you can go the LED route for $900 if you replace both.
