Travel Boards

Recommended Posts

Want to check the rigging on my F, but it seems that hangartoolbox is in a holding pattern right now.  Is there a pattern to make your own travel boards, or somewhere to purchase them.  I wouldn't mind making a set to have, but cringe as to what I expect purchase price from Mooney might be...

Thanks,

Rod

Travel boards are required to set total travel of the controls as well as establishing trim neutral, trim travel, flap take off position, the one degree offset on the rudder as well as quite useful in the overall rigging process.

Travel boards

Good Afternoon –

I have a some – not sure if they’re a set – Mooney travel boards.  Pictures included.

My dad was an A&P mechanic before he passed away and we’re trying to figure out how to sell various items.

Would you know anyone interested in these and if so, how much is reasonable to ask?

Thank you for any help you may be able to provide.

Have a great week.

Looks like you have two elevator travel boards there.  I have to check I'm missing one board from my set but I can't recall which one.  If it is the elevator board I will buy the extra one from you.

Never mind looks like one elevator board is for the K models.  I didn't know there was a difference and I think I need the rudder board anyway.

Does it fly straight today? The boards are just a starting point (usually when installing control surfaces). The fine tuning is done with flight testing. Most Mooneys fly like crap off the assembly line rigged just to the boards.

It has a heavy right wing with just me and fuel tanks equal.  Paul @ LASAR said start with checking current rigging and go from there.

I need the technical drawing.  The boards would be very easy to build.

Mooney might send the drawings to you if you ask. Of course, this opens up all sorts of sh*thouse lawyer issues...

as I've told my daughter who's thinking about law school, the lawyers always win.. ;-)

Is there a way to purchase them commercially made?

One of my coworkers has a 4'x8' shopbot cnc router that does really nice work on aluminum.  It also has a digitizer probe for generating a dxf file from a prexisting part.  He runs this as a hobbie/business and might be interesting in cutting some of sets of travel boards out if there is enough interest.  I took him up for his 1st ever ride in a small plane after he cut the panel below for me.

cool

Back when I was looking to redo my 64E panel finding someone with something like this to cut a panel was challenging.

The problem of making travel boards is not in actually fabricating them, but finding a set in good enough condition to copy them.  Does anyone have a set which can be copied?

The boards can be literally "copied" on a large scale copier, creating a technical drawing which can be copied, 1 to 1 scale.  Or the outline could be copied on a CNC or water jet type machine.  The scale can be engraved and riveted precisely onto the board (if aluminum) or by screws in wood.  In any case you get the idea.  Is there anyone who has a good set that could be used as a model.  I suspect that there may be enough people interested on Mooney Space be able to fabricate a sufficient number of sets to make it worth while for a shop, and to also make it financially reasonable.  Who is game?
