mike_elliott Posted September 8, 2015 Report Posted September 8, 2015 I have a king 297b (altitude preselect) whose display has decided to go tango uniform on me. The unit still works, it just doesn't seem to want me to know what it is up to. Does anyone have experience/recommendations to get said deviant behavior corrected? I don't believe this will require major surgery, but rather a simple displayectomy. tia Quote
N601RX Posted September 8, 2015 Report Posted September 8, 2015 If its like most other King products of that era it has a gas discharge display that plugs into a socket. Sometimes the socket contacts need cleaning. There is also a HV power supply that runs at around 200VDC that occasionally needs a new transistor and capacitor. 1 Quote
mike_elliott Posted September 8, 2015 Author Report Posted September 8, 2015 Thanks, will try to clean it first, and if no joy, off to get repaired. Quote
Jetlag Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 I had this happen to me. I sent it to Autopilot Central. They found the power supply faulty and replaced a capacitor. When they took it apart the front lens was laminating and broke so I had to get that replaced also. The capacitor was $29, lens $225 and 7 hours labor @ $105 per hour. 1 Quote
mike_elliott Posted September 9, 2015 Author Report Posted September 9, 2015 Called Mid continent today, and they seem to also think it is a capacitor, possibly a transistor in the PS. Their bench labor is $95/hr, plus parts. It is in the mail to them. Thanks Jetlag, your diagnosis seemed to be exactly what they believe is the culprit also, especially since the display lights for about 1 minute then fades to nothing. Quote
