Tankinbarber Posted July 31, 2015 Report Posted July 31, 2015 Hey Guys, I was on a night flight back home to KHND from KSEE and noticed shortly after retracting my speed break the plane wanted to roll right. It was easy to correct the roll by applying left aileron. It was hard to see out of the window at night but I can barely make the red speed brake on the right wing still halfway out. I engaged the speed brakes again in which both deplyed to the full extent. I then retracted again but still had the same issue. I was in the decent at approximatley 160+ knots. I dont recall there being a speed brake limitation as long as you were not in the do not exceed speed. I leveled and slowed the plane down to 130knots to deploy my gear. Once the gear was down i slowed to 120 knots and attempted to pull the speed brakes in again at a much slower speed. At that time they retracted perfectly. I consistently check the deployment and retraction of my speed braked in my runup and still have not seen any issues. It only seems to appear at high speeds. Anyone experience this issue? Is there a quick fix or do I need to have a mechanic take a thorough look? Quote
carusoam Posted July 31, 2015 Report Posted July 31, 2015 Expect the clutches to be worn. They are easy to maintain. I sent mine out to be OH'd They are designed to be controllable in flight with an imbalance of deployment... Expensive pain in the butt that might be able to be put off til next annual? Best regards, -a- Quote
Txbyker Posted July 31, 2015 Report Posted July 31, 2015 Check the top plate screws and make sure they are snug. Mine were loose and did the same thing in that the plate interfered with the speed brake. Worked on the ground but not in the air. Russ 1 Quote
amillet Posted July 31, 2015 Report Posted July 31, 2015 MY speed brakes would not retract the last 1/4". POH sopplement calls for inspection/overhaul every 10 years. Just had mine done with this year's annual. About $1200. Quote
kortopates Posted July 31, 2015 Report Posted July 31, 2015 Speed brakes were not standard equipment in 231s - not till the 252. So what kind do you have? The above advice is only good for newer electric ones. At the time of the 231 they installed vacuum actuated brakes. If that is what you have it could be a spring or the conduit caring the cable may be disintegrating - it's like a bicycle cable. But nothing simple here. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote

kortopates Posted July 31, 2015 Report Posted July 31, 2015 Good, everything is contained in the cartridge and they are much more serviceable and easier to work on. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
Eraaen Posted August 3, 2015 Report Posted August 3, 2015 Had the very same issue. When brakes are up you can see a metal plate on the back of the front brake. Mine just needed a little push to bend it back level. The back brake was catching on it at speed. Quote
