Landscape Evolution

Recommended Posts

I didn't put this down in the Avionics Forum, since it's (probably) not really a serious question, but I was wondering how many units Aspen would have to sell to recoup the R&D, and probably recertifying, the production of a landscape oriented Aspen Evolution.  I think it would slide right into the space currently occupied by my DG and Nav 122.  I like the nostalgia of a shotgun panel, but I also like utility and am (try to be) a CB.  I mean, there's a whole lot of vintage panels out there and upgrading them to a standard six configuration is expensive, time consuming, and (especially if you do it yourself) a real pain.  I think it's a no-brainer... so, what say the masses?

They "have" one! They "call" it backup display.

But unfortunately it's more vaporware! Aspen seems to be really good at this.

They roll out glossy pictures of stuff that they, for reasons known only to them and their Gods, don't have any intention or capability to materialize.

Here are some more.

I called Aspen to get info on their backup since all my backup steam gauges where going out. It would have worked perfectly in Landscape position to replace my old gauges. They said it wasn't certified and wanted to use my plane to get the STC for it. Needless to say I ended up going with the Mid-Continent SAM unit which is a really nice unit just a lot more expensive than the others option with exception of the L3. I was waiting for the Sandia Quattro but after a discussion with them it was apparent they where a long way off from certification.

I'm curious about what certification? It is TSOd as a primary backup. What part of the TSO did not cover primary instruments?

I waiting for my avionics guy to give me the answer but basically it required a STC to put it in as a backup and they wanted to use my plane for the process.

Not married to Garmin or anyone else but you're entitled to your opinion.

At least when they roll out the glossy pictures of a new product two things are true: first, it is their product (as opposed to a rebranded one from someone else) and second, they have them in boxes ready to ship as soon as the phones ring!

As to the op's question, and this was my point, the aspen BU display remains nothing more than pretty vaporware.

But thanks for the enlightenment!

Let us know what you find out. It may have a TSO but not the type certificate for Mooneys. Considering the target market something like this is targeted for (VFR planes), they may not have the STC for Mooneys but for Cessnas and Pipers.
