Vintage Mooney Cowling Mod

Recommended Posts

  • 4 weeks later...

It's been a little while since I posted an update. I'll be going to the fiberglass shop this week to approve the plug and then the mold will be made as well as 2 sets of parts. In the mean time, I've been working on the air filter mounting and the top cowling baffle seal area. I've mounted a K&N air filter in the left forward baffle and installed a duct to adapt from the air filter to the carb air box.

On the top cowling, I'm installing a .025 piece of aluminum over the stiffeners to give the baffle seals a nice flat surface to contact and seal tightly. I'll see how this works and decide if it will be part of the STC.

If you're in need of gear pre load tools, I have 14 sets in stock. Check out my website www.gdsaero.com for details.

Thank you,

David

This looks very cool.  I may want one someday- assuming I ever recover financially from my panel upgrade this summer   ;)

+1, but my current financial impediment is a new camshaft.

Optional vs. required. This is why owning an airplane is so expensive. If you manage to escape the required nightmare repairs, you elect to sink money in it to make it your own. Can't win.

Hi flyntgr1, the baffling will be part of the STC and the air filter will be relocated, so yes you will need to install the new baffling to sign off the STC.

Hi Matt, I really hope to have my airplane at Osh so people can see this up close versus showing parts and pictures. It's going to be close as to whether I make it or not right now.

Thanks,

David

A few more update photos. One is of the new carb air box installed to check for fit and the other two photos are of the air filter duct mold. I'll make the air filter duct out of fiberglass for the prototype and then evaluate it for the STC.

Thanks,

David

Matt, Sean declined saying he was too busy with a T-33, his new favorite airplane!

I have the actual new cowling parts in my hand. I'll start the installation of them this weekend. I think they turned out really nice and am looking forward to seeing how they look on my Mooney.

Here's a few pictures of the molds and the completed parts. I'd appreciate any feedback.

Thank you,

David

David, those look great! I'm still shocked by the missing chin bump, but am enthusiastic to see how it looks when mounted.

Please refresh my memory with what other external (painted) parts will need to be replaced besides these two? I'm already dreaming of an installation of my own . . . .

Hi Hank, there are these two parts and a panel that mounts under the carb airbox between the cowl flaps that will be changed and require paint. I'm not sure if I'll post a picture of the full installation here or wait to reveal it at Oshkosh if I make it. If I don't make it I'll post plenty of pictures here.

Thank you,

David

I thought I'd post a few more pictures of the new cowling mod installation progress. Also included a picture of the completed new carb air box. Looking forward to having this on and complete.

Thanks,

David
