BillC Posted November 1, 2014 Report Posted November 1, 2014 I'm on my way to get my new (to me) '97 Ovation. It has a cigar lighter. Does anyone know for sure what voltage it is? As usual, many thanks. Bill Quote
FlyDave Posted November 1, 2014 Report Posted November 1, 2014 Bill, I believe the Ovations and Bravo's are 24v with 2 batteries and dual alternators. Tell us more about your new plane. Dave Quote
Piloto Posted November 1, 2014 Report Posted November 1, 2014 Some 28V owners change the lighter to 12v to allow the use of automotive appliances (DVD players, cell phones, video games). Best way to know is to check the actual voltage. There are 28v to 14V converters for this. José 1 Quote
BillC Posted November 1, 2014 Author Report Posted November 1, 2014 Thanks for the responses. It does have dual 28 volt batteries with dual alternators. I know the Garmin 796 will run on 28v but to charge my cell phone, ipad, etc, I was hoping Mooney installed a 12V adapter to preclude the need to buy a converter. I'll check the voltage when I get home. Anyway, the good news. I found a '97 Ovation that has all the goodies that I need. 530W, KFC150, O2, Speed brakes, HSI, JPI 800, Shadin totalizer, etc. 900 total time. Excellent maintenance. Kept in a heated hangar since new. (Unfortunately, no more) The bad news, I sold my 201. It's hard to beat 155ktas @ 10gph. http://www.trade-a-plane.com/detail/1779658.html Quote
FlyDave Posted November 1, 2014 Report Posted November 1, 2014 Nice looking plane Bill - Congratulations! Are you doing transition training with a Mooney instructor? I was glad I did when I went from a 201 to a Bravo. I think you can get very close to the economy of a 201 in an ovation running LOP and maybe 55% power. Let us know how your new plane treats you. FlyDave Posted November 1, 2014 Report Posted November 1, 2014 Bill, Quite a few device chargers support a 24v input. You can also get USB cigarette lighter adapters that will work in a 24v system. You just need to charge your device with a USB cable instead of the charger for that device. Dave Quote
BillC Posted November 1, 2014 Author Report Posted November 1, 2014 Good point Dave. I'll look into it. Thanks, Bill Quote
Robert C. Posted November 1, 2014 Report Posted November 1, 2014 Double check but I'm quite sure the outlet is 12v. Since the electrical system is 24v I assumed that it was 24v and bought an inverter from 24v to 110v only to discover that my Ovation (2006) has a 12v lighter. Robert PS, gratz on your purchase, Ovations are great, can't imagine you not loving her Quote
LANCECASPER Posted November 1, 2014 Report Posted November 1, 2014 All Mooneys since 1985 have been 28 volt systems. I own a '97 Mooney Encore and they were still putting a 24v socket in for the cigar lighter. I think they started installing the stepped down 12v cigar lighter around 2000 and on. Quote
triple8s Posted November 1, 2014 Report Posted November 1, 2014 I have a 96 ovation and the cig socket under P T M is 12v there is another under right side yoke that is 28v. I was wondering is I can power my garmin 496 on 28 v. It says it can be but I was wondering if it has to have a special power cord to run on the higher voltage or if there is internal regulation. Anybody know? I wanted to not have the 12cig socket tied up and I hate wires everywhere. Oh, FYI on cell phones and IPad charging, if you have a garmin 430 chances are when you charge a phone or IPad the squelch will turn off. Mine does. Quote
Awful_Charlie Posted November 1, 2014 Report Posted November 1, 2014 My 97/98 Bravo has a 12V outlet, and it is placarded as such. There is a box behind the right hand centre console trim panel which does the 28->12v conversion. It all looks to be factory installed, but I can't be sure (but hoping, as there's nothing in the log books for it!) Quote
rgpilot Posted November 1, 2014 Report Posted November 1, 2014 I powered my 496 from the 28 volt outlet in my 93 M20J. 496 can handle 28 or 12 volts. I now power it from the 12 volt outlet in my 2003 Ovation. Quote
Wakeup Posted November 1, 2014 Report Posted November 1, 2014 ??? I tried to charge my iPad mini while I was flying last weekend and it would not charge. I have seen a thread indicating why but I can't find it. It does have a adapter so I can charge more then one thing. I have my area 560 connected to one plug and it works but the iPad mini does not. Any suggestions?? Thanks. Troy Quote
N601RX Posted November 1, 2014 Report Posted November 1, 2014 These small battery packs are available for $20 and hard to beat for any who travels, flys, or just has long days where they are not always around a charging source. It also still works if there is electrical failure. I have the one in the link below and it will recharge my iphone 7 times before it needs recharging. It will completely charge multiple phones in 1 hr. http://www.ravpower.com/ravpower-dynamo-on-the-go-rp-pb07-super-high-capacity-power-bank-10000mah-capacity-1a-and-2a-dual-usb-output-for-ipod-iphone-smartphones-digital-cameras-tablets-and-e-books.html Quote
triple8s Posted November 1, 2014 Report Posted November 1, 2014 I made a small battery pack from two latern batteries had a cigarette lighter plug to plug my chargers in but when I plugged the iPad into it my 430 would still break squelch. It must generate some type signal that interferes with the radio. My kx165 has no issues with iPad charging. Quote
